And baby makes three

While I specialize in honeymoons and romance travel, that also means — by definition — that I am starting to see my clientele expand to include families!  I love it when my honeymooners come back to me for anniversary trips, babymoons, and then for family vacations once the little ones come along 🙂  Lauren and Christen are long-time clients who just took their first family “escape” with baby Wes. They were headed to Mexico and had lots of questions about choosing the right resort. From the feedback below, it looks like we hit a home run with the Iberostar Paraiso Beach     .

Hi Annie!

We had a fabulous trip! Travel was easy and went off without a hitch.  Amstar was great and welcomed us with open arms and even helped us install our car seat. The resort was absolutely gorgeous and everyone totally catered to Wes.

There were beautiful peacocks, coatis, iguanas, and parrots everywhere.   The food was good but not great but that was totally fine for us.  Our room was second to none with a great view of the beach and we were by far in the best building on the resort.  The pools were exactly as we had dreamed they would be.  They offered the party when we wanted it and some serene spots to get away from it all when needed.

Lauren jetskied and got a massage which was all done on site.  I scuba dived with Dressel Divers which was also located on the resort.  It was seriously the coolest thing I have ever done.  Scuba diving the second largest coral reef in the world is definitely a story I will get lots of mileage out of.  Not to mention, the dive company catered to me as a new diver. Iberostar was well organized and offered many (safe) excursions.  We actually went to Xel Ha and had an absolute blast.  The snorkeling was amazing and they had things for the little LITTLE kids to do.  They even had life jackets in Wes’s size (14 months old).

We would recommend an Iberostar resort to anyone with or without kids!

Thanks (as always) for setting us up for a wonderful trip!

A family getaway on the Disney Wonder

Amy, Kevin and Elle just returned from their first Disney cruise and were nice enough to send me a really detailed trip report. If you’ve every wondered whether this is an experience that your family would enjoy….read on!

We are back–and I am at my desk at school–waking up to 40 degree temps after a week in the Caribbean is tough.  We had an amazing time–if you are considering a Disney Cruise, go. It is worth it!!

We were met at the airport by a driver–so nice to do it this way–we could be on our own time schedule–they had their own loading zone so we could take our time getting her car seat in (which they provided) and our luggage settled.  We drove from Orlando to Port Canaveral (about an hour) to the Radisson.  Awesome hotel–great pool with waterfalls–which was great after traveling all day.  We arranged a shuttle from the hotel to the port ($6 a person–and they do long term parking there if you are driving in).

The next morning we took the city bus a few miles down to a Starbucks and a few last minute things at Walgreens. Then we rode to the port and got on the boat (Disney Wonder).  They have a really nice terminal and everything was so easy.  The only line we waited in was to register Elle for the Youth Programs and when we got to the front their computers went down–so they put the band on her and we registered her on the boat that night (took less than 5 minutes). We headed to the buffet for lunch–great food and service there–they had special kid trays so you didn’t have to worry about them dropping a plate.  Plus they had people carrying your stuff to a table for you–with a smile!  We then dropped our bags at our stateroom and decorated our door.  Our room was great–we had a king size bed (it felt like) and then there was a couch that they folded out and prepared every night for Elle. We had an inside stateroom — to me it wasn’t worth paying more for a balcony as we were only in our rooms to sleep–I know Kevin’s parents paid over $1000 more for their balcony and their room was about the same size as ours.    We got dressed for dinner.  Our first night was at The Parrot Cay–a Caribbean-themed restaurant–and met our 2 cool waiters who had things all set up for Elle.  Really good food and it is nice because they bring the kids’ food when you get your appetizer so as soon as they are done eating–we brought Elle up to the kids club while we enjoyed our dinner. She loved going to the kids club.  We went to the Golden Mickeys show–the shows were great because they were only 45 minutes–perfect length for kids. Before the show we met Ariel!

Next morning we woke up in Nassau–we ate breakfast outside overlooking the port–very cool.  We actually didn’t get off the boat at all here.  We stayed on and swam and Elle went to the kids club for a little bit. She also got to meet Anna and Elsa (it was a ticketed meet and greet and I got tickets as soon as we got on board it wasn’t advertised until you got on the boat–which really worked for us since we had no excursions planned). Then she had an accident–swimming in the pool she slipped and split open her chin requiring stitches–very traumatic for me–she of course bounced right back after many tears–we had to meet with the head of security but everyone was so great and kept checking on us to make sure we were ok (luckily we had travel insurance so I filed a medical claim with them this morning!)  We had dinner at Triton’s that night (Ariel-themed)–our waiters had everything Elle liked ready to go–which was prefect.  It was also Halloween night–lots of people dressed up–we didn’t know about it ahead of time–but Elle had her Elsa dress and I wore a blue dress and put my hair in a bun with a crystal headband (and called myself Cinderella).  We kept Elle with us through dinner because she had gotten hurt-glad we did they had special Halloween desserts–a chocolate spider! We went to Toy Story the musical that night–great cute show.

The next morning we woke up at Castaway Cay–amazing.  We loved their beach–everything was clean and calm–there was a cool slide you could go down–you had to be 38 inches tall–Elle just made it–we spent 2 days just hanging out at the beach–we rented a tube to float around in both days and Kevin rented a bike and rode around the island for awhile.  They had wagons and strollers you could borrow to get around which was nice–we saw lots of people bring theirs but we didn’t–Elle hasn’t ridden in awhile so we borrowed a wagon.  This was the most relaxing part of our vacation–we stayed on the beach til it was time to get back on the boat.  The 3rd night was Pirate Party night–again people dressed up!  They gave everyone bandanas in their staterooms so we wore those–we met Donald Duck, Jack Sparrow, Mickey Mouse and did a family picture.  The restaurant had a Pirate parade and everyone paraded and did the limbo–they had special light up cups for the kids. We skipped the show–it was a comedian and we were tired–we did go up to the pirate party–we grabbed a spot next to a dancing block so we got to dance with chip and dale and Minnie mouse–it was kind of long so we didn’t make it until the fireworks. The final night we had dinner at Animators Palette which was so cool–Mickey Mouse came through–and seeing all the art work light up and change colors was very exciting Elle loved it! We met Minnie Mouse on the final night–for some of the best pictures she was finally smiling.

It was so worth it–the experience was very much designed for them.  They made everything easy and everyone was so willing to help and get you what you needed.  If I knew we were going to have a fall break again I would have signed up again!

(Aqua)duck, (Aqua)duck, dolphins!

And here is why cruises are such a great option for families:  My client, Karen, took a Disney cruise this winter with her 11-year-old twins (and without her husband) and all three of them had a wonderful time! Plenty of onboard activities to keep them busy — separately — but great opportunities for family time when they all wanted to be together. All in all, fantastic memories made, and they’re already looking forward to the next trip. But maybe they’ll bring Dad this time 🙂

Hi Ann,

We had a great time!  We had no trouble traveling out of Westchester Airport other than a little delay.  (The Delta flight that was supposed to leave about the same time was delayed even longer because they had to dig the plane out of the snow!)  I’m sure you saw my FB post about winning 25,000 JetBlue points.  The COO of JetBlue was on our plane and raffled off two prizes, which I actually won the first one.

The night at the Animal Kingdom Lodge was good.  We got there too late to see much outside of our room but the morning brought a parade of zebras and some birds.  Breakfast at Boma was amazing as always.  The kids decided to swim before we headed off to the cruise.  The pool is heated so they were happy.  We had plenty of time since our bus left at 11.  They took the luggage from our room while the kids were swimming and the bus pick up was handled well.

view on the deck of a Disney Cruise ShipWe were on the ship just after 12:30 and had a quick lunch before the rooms were ready at 1:30.  Then the kids swam again and Kyle did the Aquaduck five times.  After the emergency drill, we got ready for dinner.  Our tablemates were a family of five who used to live in Brewster but now live in Hopewell Junction.  Their daughter was a year older than Kyle & Jenn and the boys were younger.  We had lots of fun with them during the week. Check out what the waiter brought when I said I wanted “nothing” for dessert!

a plate of "nothing" with nothing written in chocolateTrip highlights and recommendations:

Stingray City and the Turtle Farm in the Cayman Islands.  Amazing to see all the turtles and swim with the Stingrays.  The rays acted like dogs, bumping up against you to be fed.

Dolphinarus in Cozumel was great!  Their photographer was very good, and being able to kayak, paddleboard, and snorkel after the dolphin swim was a bonus. The included lunch was okay.  Photos were pricey but when I selected a basic photo CD package, I got a very good “family” deal that included the DVD and some prints.  I wasn’t crazy about the gauntlet of vendors getting off and on the ship but I know it’s like that in most places.

Rainforest Room – wish I had more time to just lay on the warm loungers and use the facilities.

Aladdin production and a show by “Buckets & Boards” were both great.  I would skip “Believe” next time and we didn’t see the other shows.  We actually missed the Pirate night!  We stopped at the room to watch some cartoons after dinner while waiting for the activities to start.  We all fell asleep!

It turns out Jennie wanted to hang out with me for most of the cruise.  I had to help her find activities before I headed off to a wine tasting and the rainforest room.  Kyle was happy to ride the Aquaduck, play basketball, and he enjoyed several of the Edge programs.  He took the room wave phone and was able to text/call me if he needed.  Jennie had the phone a few times too and was better at getting in touch.

children in a water filled tube at a water park on Disney Cruise

The car service was great.  They took our bags and put them in a mini trailer.  We were too tired to hang out at Seaworld until pick up time and they were there within 30 minutes when I called for an early pick up.  I’m glad I picked Seaworld for the day because it turned out to be rainy and there was one thunderstorm when they had to close the outside rides.  It was also empty due to the weather so we didn’t have to wait for one ride.

Thank you for all your tips and for the OBC.  I stayed with a “cash only” room charge for the first half of the cruise and used gift cards I had gotten through BJs and my Disney card rewards.  Then I switched to my credit card.  It helped me keep track of my purchases because I picked up a print out every two days from Guest Services.

Now I’m a little lost.  For the first time in years, I don’t have a trip planned!  I’m going to have to do some research for some long weekend trips in August.  We have DVC points to spend so I’m going to start with their other holdings.  Any suggestions?

Have a good day and thank you again for your help!
Karen

Making Memories in Mexico

There is nothing better than getting a note from a client telling me what an amazing time they had on their vacation, and thanking me for helping them make such a great choice of destination and resort 🙂  This is why I do what I do, and this is why everyone should work with a trusted travel professional.

 Hi Ann,

We had a wonderful time. Everything worked out great. The resort property was very clean and the staff really could not have been better. We had the feeling that they really cared about us and cared that we were enjoying ourselves. We felt safe and welcome. The food was excellent. A vast assortment, very good quality and no long waits. We all ate well and tried some new things also.

There was a good mix of age ranges at the property.  I was so glad I picked this one. It fit us perfectly. One afternoon my older daughter and I took the bus down to the Hard Rock Cafe in search of a hurricane glass that she collects. The location was way down in the heart of the Cancun hotel district. As much as I like cities, and I know once you get into your resort you don’t think much about what is outside, I was really happy to get out of there and back to our place. As it happens, that Hard Rock location doesn’t serve those drinks. We wasted no time getting back on the bus. The modest size of the Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun is definitely more appealing. My younger girls felt comfortable and safe. If they forgot something in their room, it was very easy for them to just run up and get it.

The entertainment staff offered that if we wanted to check out some of the night clubs, they run a bus for those who want to venture out. My older daughter said if we were there longer she would have looked into that.

The day trip to Tulum and Xel Ha worked out well. I didn’t realize the bus ride was as long as it was. It was nice to have a swimming option after touring the ruins. That day the weather could have been a little warmer. We did not swim as long as I thought we would. Also I did not realize you can pretty much walk around the whole lagoon. After looking at the map on the way home I realized a good approach is to start at the far end with a tube and work your way over. The bus ride over advertises all the extra things you can do there, it would have been good if they gave a briefing of a good way to approach the snorkeling. We’ll know better next time. I would definitely go there again.

I would say our timing was pretty good. The area was definitely getting busy with the spring break kids. The property next door was  a mad house. Ann, I was so glad I worked with you! Who knows if I would have picked that place because of some good deal they were offering. Our vacation would have been very different if we were in the middle of that.   The only confusion I had was I thought our rooms came with a $300 spa discount. I remembered seeing it on the advertisement when I was choosing between properties. When we checked in I didn’t think to ask about it right away and they did not mention it. After a couple days they of sorting things out they did offer some credits and we did take advantage of some spa services.

Also we ended up upgrading our rooms to ocean view from garden view. They offered to upgrade one room for free and the other for $40/night. There was no pressure. We arrived around 2:00pm they said our rooms would not be ready until at least three. They were not quite sure which rooms we would have, so I went for the upgrade. I thought I would spoil myself a little since I hadn’t been on vacation in a while. I had a nice walk around the property so next time I go I’ll know what rooms to ask for.

The transportation people from Lomas were very nice and helpful as well.

So, Ann, thanks to you we had a great time!  It was alot of pressure on me to have this turn out well, because we haven’t been anywhere in so long. It was great, we all enjoyed ourselves, and I am  happy to say we can be travelers again!

Thanks again,

Janet

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
