Perfect Pairs for Multi-Destination Travel

If you’re going to invest the time and money to fly “across the pond”, it makes sense to visit more than one place, experience more than one culture, and add variety to your adventure! But which cities and countries work well together for a multi-destination adventure? We always like to pair destinations that are easy to travel between, complement each other or contrast nicely. Choosing the right pair will obviously depend on your personal travel style and the experiences you crave, but there are some always-popular pairings that we think go together like peanut butter and jelly. Here are our top five European destination pairs:

A 50th Celebration in Paris & the Italian Riviera

Annette and Mike were looking for an incredible luxury adventure to celebrate her 50th birthday. Something classic, full of shopping, champagne, great meals, and maybe even a little beach time. We knew Paris had to be top-of-the-list! Adding a little bit of the Italian Riviera to relax and slow down created the perfect grand celebration for a milestone adventure! Here’s how their trip went:

We loved our trip and cannot thank you enough for your help in planning. Everything was so organized and exceeded our expectations!

Paris Tours

Paris was just amazing. Every sight, everything we saw in the short time we were there was amazing. Feret from Paris and Beyond Tours was more than amazing. We would never ever have been able to see as much as we did in Paris being there a short 3 days. He took us on a tour for the entire day of every possible place we would want to see. His knowledge was incredible. We learned so much history, it was incredible.

He also spent extra time with us helping me shop at Chanel and what a disaster that was. We were there on the day of the new launch for Fall collections so shopping in Paris was quite impossible the days we were there. He helped me navigate that process so well. The boat cruise was also a highlight. Ann and her partner (I forget his name) were so so amazing. They made homemade apps, and the cruise and history we saw was something out of a movie. Highly Highly recommend it. They were easy to find too as I was a bit concerned about meeting them at the correct spot.

Paris Hotel

Our hotel in Paris (Le Metropolitan) I have to say was just ok. Great people. An incredible spot, and the view was incredible. But it was very small. No amenities or concierges really. Maybe that is what you get and you pay for that view? The view was unreal. The location was great too in one of Paris’ most famous neighborhoods. (16th arrondissement- learn more about Paris neighborhoods here!) Paris btw, was also very safe and clean I have to say. Transportation was extremely easy with Ubers too when we didn’t have cars. We also just wandered at night and found local restaurants and we had the best meals. Overall it was terrific.

San Remo

We flew into Nice and had the most awesome driver meet us. We fell in love with this family-owned business. Luigi and his son Luca both drove us on subsequent days to Monte Carlo and Portofino/Santa Margherita. Hotel San Remo is a close 45 min drive from Nice airport and we arrived at an incredible room with the most amazing views of the Ligurian Sea. OMG. The hotel was beautiful and full of amenities we like — the spa, the pool, the outside bar and restaurant, and shop in the lobby for a last-minute bag to take home all my purchases lol. It has a very famous history of royalty staying there and it was beyond amazing. Our room was huge. Our day trip to Monte Carlo/Monaco was amazing. The most incredibly wealthy area of shopping, boats, restaurants, and casino I think I have ever seen. We shopped all day, and enjoyed Champagne at an outdoor Veuve Cliquot pop-up champagne spot. AMAZING. I wanted a day to shop, and Monte Carlo did not disappoint.

We then had a day at the pool and by this point in the trip we needed this so badly. The pool at the San Remo was built by a famous Italian architect and has a rich history. The lunch there and the view was amazing. It was a peaceful restful day. The hotel also suggested the best small local restaurants that we ate at the following nights and they were just amazing.

Portofino & Santa Margarita

We then did a day trip to Portofino and Santa Margarita and all I can say is wow. AMAZING. This was my 3rd and Mike’s 4th time in Italy and we have seen a lot of Italy including the Amalfi Coast. This compared.

Small coastal towns with beautiful colorful architecture and restaurants and shopping to die for. The place we had lunch at was amazing in Portofino OMG. La Terrazza at Belmond Splendido. Was a dream location. AMAZING.

Our driver Luigi again, was great getting us there. Gave us so much history along the way. Knew where to take us, how to get us there and tell us all the amazing things along the way. We never could have done our day trips without him. Professional and the best.

Then my bday ended with Roberta (owner of San Remo Experience). We were so moved by her. She took us off the beaten path to a very small village where we learned to make pesto and fresh pasta. Had the most wonderful tour of beautiful churches, the town square, and local osterias. She had such a beautiful heart and was so patient and kind. So knowledgeable. We loved her. We had the best day.

I honestly would not change a thing about our trip. We loved loved loved it. Thank you for all your help and guidance we couldn’t have done it without you!

Top 5 Destinations to Celebrate Halloween

Whether you adore dressing up for the day, can’t wait to take the kids trick-or-treating, revel in scary stories, or just enjoy a great themed party – Halloween is a perfect time to celebrate Fall. Although it feels like a modern holiday, Halloween can trace its roots back to the ancient pagan festival of Samhain. Samhain celebrates the change of seasons and the transition from summer to winter — a time when the veil between our world and the other world is at its thinnest. While every destination that celebrates Halloween will have the traditional core elements, there are a few destinations that stand above the rest for their Halloween style.

Ireland

Since Halloween can trace its origins back to Gaelic and Celtic culture, it seems fitting to celebrate in Ireland! Wander through historic castle ruins, and feel the lines of magic and reality blur at the edges of the ancient forests and in the soft steps of the meadows. In Ireland, you’ll enjoy bonfires, folk stories, light shows, and music — all centered around a spirit of celebration, the changing of the seasons, and a little bit of myth. Dublin offers perfectly spooky haunted tours and Bram Stoker-esque castles. Check out the Púca Festival. which concentrates on storytelling, music, and food in the historic Boyne Valley. Or, make your way to Northern Ireland for Europe’s biggest Halloween festival in Derry! This giant marvel invites you to explore different worlds, enjoy interactive light shows circus & fire performers, and take part in costume parades. Ireland offers something for everyone from parties into the wee hours of the morning to kid-friendly apple bobbing and face painting. With all the festivals rooted in tradition, this is a great addition to your Irish adventure.

New Orleans

Second only to Mardi Gras, Halloween in one of the country’s most haunted cities is a big to-do. At any time of year, New Orleans offers voodoo shops, ghost tours, and haunted sites, but Halloween magnifies all these historic, frightening, and gothic elements tenfold. The haunted atmosphere of the city is given an extra boost with towering skeletons, ghostly horsemen, and endless themed parties. The famous parades are complete with frightening floats where revelers throw candy into the crowds. New Orleans does have a few kid-friendly activities, but this is primarily a holiday geared toward adults. Celebrate with your friends at elegant weekend-long parties. Elaborate costumes, exciting galas, and incredible balls grace the streets of the French Quarter, and the houses are decorated to the nines! If you can’t visit New Orleans in February for Mardi Gras, but are still looking for that party vibe, October is the time to go.

London

Full of history and tradition, but with all the trimmings of a big city, London offers something unique. It seems like in every corner of London from October 22nd- 31st there’s a Halloween celebration. Enjoy a modern Halloween with themed menus in restaurants and bars, Madame Tussaud’s Alien Escape Experience, Crystal Maze experiences, countless themed escape rooms, and endless costume parties. But London also boasts a long, dark, and storied past, with plenty of ghost tours, serial killer walks, graveyards, underground passages, and dungeons. Throughout the last week of October, London will allow you to immerse yourself in an interactive Halloween, blending historical and modern scares.

Disney

Trying to celebrate Halloween in the most kid-friendly way possible? Look no further than Disney! All of the Disney Parks and cruises worldwide celebrate Halloween in style. Marvel at specialty shows, meet-and-greets, and fireworks displays that you won’t see at any other time of year. The kids will love meeting their favorite Villains who only come out for Halloween. Or getting unique photos of the other characters in specialty Halloween costumes. Mickey himself hosts a Not-So-Scary Halloween Party which requires advance tickets. Your favorite rides also get a makeover adding spooky — but not-too-scary — Halloween elements. When you tire of rides, parties, and villains, you can enjoy specialty foods or head into the shops for some seasonal merch. In Disney World, Halloween brings in a huge foodie element with lots of new specialties to try and enjoy. The kids will love the Coco-themed installation! Running through the 2nd of November, it teaches them more about the Day of the Dead. With all sorts of things you’ll never see any other time of year, Halloween is a great time to enjoy a Disney experience.

Canada

Canada is one of the best destinations for leaf-peeping, getting out into nature, and enjoying Halloween in a quaint, kid-friendly way. Canadians celebrate Halloween very similarly to Americans with scary movies, trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, and autumn festivals. You can enjoy small-town fairs, as well as carnival rides, pumpkin patches, or apple bobbing for the kids. Victoria on Vancouver Island is British Columbia’s most haunted city. They celebrate with a lot of spookier activities including haunted night ziplining. The bigger cities like Toronto and Vancouver are dotted with parties and Zombie walks. All over Canada, there are plenty of events for all ages. Infuse your Halloween with a little bit of wholesome, light-hearted fun. This is the perfect place if you don’t want Halloween to be the main focus of your Autumn outdoor adventure but just have it sprinkled into the great outdoors.

Are you ready to add a little travel to next year’s Halloween celebrations? Let us know! If you’re considering a late-October or early-November adventure, it’s worth adding these incredible Halloween experiences to your trip!

Fall Adventures Beyond the Leaves

Fall Beyond the Leaves Pin
Pin it for later!

Here in the Northeast, the brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows of the Fall foliage are astounding. Every year they bring thousands of visitors to prime viewing destinations across New England. There is no doubt that such brilliant colors merit a specific trip, but what if you already live here? Or you’ve seen enough Fall foliage in your lifetime? There are lots of other reasons that Autumn is the perfect time to travel! It’s one of the best seasons for exploring the world as temperatures cool, prices drop and crowds thin. So what can you design your Fall trip around if not the foliage?

Watch the Sky

Fall is the perfect time to head into those dark, open landscapes and look up! Fall is the sweet spot between too-much daylight and cloudy, wintry weather. This creates the perfect conditions for enjoying the night sky.

In the far north, you can watch the stunning Aurora Borealis dance across the sky. Iceland and Norway start to have fewer hours of daylight, there is more solar activity, and lakes and rivers remain ice-free. This means you can double the opportunities to spot the northern lights — by either looking up to the sky or the hauntingly beautiful reflection in the water.

Aside from the Aurora, Fall is a great time to watch a meteor shower. Dark-sky locations like Wyoming, Scotland, or Quebec offer incredible stargazing. For added luxury and convenience, consider glamping. Often the tents come with windows above the bed so you watch the sky in warmth and comfort.

Watch the Animals

a cheetah lying in the sun in some tall grasses
A cheetah in Namibia [Photo Credit: Sean Robertson via Unsplash]

Fall marks the migration season for many animals. In the Southern hemisphere, you can catch astounding humpback, right whale, and blue whale migrations. Destinations like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand all offer whales breaching so close you can see them from the shore. Even if you find yourself getting seasick on a boat, you can enjoy watching hundreds of these majestic creatures from the beach. Meanwhile, Vancouver Island, Canada becomes the Orca capital of the world!

If you’d rather turn to the skies than the seas, grab your binoculars! Fall is a great time to see countless bird migrations. During the migrations, we have a better idea of exactly where they’ll stop for rest and water. You can go north to the rocky coast of Maine to see fluffy Atlantic puffins and imposing eagles, hawks, and falcons. Or travel south to Texas, for a huge variety of songbirds and shorebirds. To see something really unique, visit Central Mexico to experience the epic butterfly migration

Maybe you have a stronger sense of adventure and really want to maximize the animals you’ll see this Fall. It is the perfect time to go on Safari! At the beginning of the dry season, you can watch in awe as animals of all kinds gather around the watering holes. There’s not as much tall green grass to camouflage the big 5, so you’ll have a better chance of seeing some amazing creatures while avoiding the crowds and heat.

Foodies & Festivals

[Photo Credit: Liz via Shared Adventures Travel]

With Autumn comes the harvest and celebrations. We’ve survived the heat of summer and now it’s time to collect the hard-earned produce and celebrate before winter sets in. If you’re a foodie, Fall is an amazing time to travel. You can experience the olive, almond, and chestnut harvests in southern Europe. Check out food festivals all across northern Europe, particularly in Emilia Romagna Italy, France, and Austria, and enjoy chocolate, olive oil, truffles, and delicious hearty local delicacies.

Most famously, there are wine harvests in California, Italy, France, Austria, and the Republic of Georgia. Winemakers typically finish harvesting in early Fall. This means during a trip in late October and November they’ll have more time to spend with visitors while still producing fantastic products. In Austria, you can try new wines at the wine taverns (Heurigens) many of which are only open in the Fall.

If food is not your passion, there are still plenty of interesting festivals to enjoy. The Autumn equinox brings festivals to Stonehenge and Chichen Itza. At the famous Mayan Ruins, the equinox creates a snake of sunlight on the stairs. The full moon closest to the equinox heralds Moon Festivals in Hong Kong, China, and Vietnam. Music and book festivals pop up all over the UK.

a traditional mongolian hunter and their eagle at the fall festival

For something unique and astonishing you can check out the Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia in early October. Which celebrates and shows off the centuries-old Kazakh hunting tradition in the Altai Mountains. Or, stay closer to home and see the Alburquerque Balloon Fiesta to watch thousands of hot air balloons soar over the desert landscape.

Second Summer

If you feel yourself clinging to the last warm days of summer — not ready to let go — you’re in luck! The southern hemisphere is entering spring, creating ideal temperatures to explore before it gets too hot. Destinations like Namibia, and Central and South America offer perfectly sunny fresh weather.

In the northern hemisphere, Fall is the perfect time to visit places that were too hot during the summer. Cooler but still warm temperatures grace the deserts of the Southwestern U.S., Dubai, Jordan, and Morocco. Enjoy all the striking landscapes without melting in the heat, and create an endless summer vacation.

City Breaks

Cities in Autumn can be magical. The weather is fresh and the throngs of summer crowds have dissipated. Visiting a tourist hotspot in the Fall is always a treat because the locals are still enjoying the outdoor-friendly weather but without the long queues, crowds, and high prices. Cities like Paris, Barcelona, Florence, Montreal, and New York shine even brighter in the Autumn. You risk a little wind, a little chill, and a little rain but the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Which adventure will inspire your Fall vacation? Whether you’re excited about a festival, ready to spot some wildlife, or hanging on to the last tendrils of summer — let us know! We are always excited to help plan incredible custom vacations!

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
