When to Go

Now that you’ve discovered why you’re excited to go on an island vacation, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the when and the how.

Sometimes we get to decide when we’re going to take our vacation and sometimes it’s dictated by work, school, or other responsibilities. If you have a limited and specific timeframe, then you want to look at things like weather and sea conditions. Are you dreaming of only warm sunny days without a cloud in the sky? Do you despise humidity with every fiber of your being? Can you only travel in September during hurricane season? Consider the seasonality:

Dry Season: February – May

Wet season: June- November

High Season: December – April

Mediterranean

Best Weather: May- October

Best for Honeymoon:

St. Maarten/St. Martin (half Dutch and half French) is one of the smaller Caribbean islands but it offers a world of experiences in one trip. The island has world-class spas and resorts, stunning beaches, intriguing nature, fabulous shopping, and delectable food, and it’s all within a short 3.5-hour flight from New York. If you’re considering a Caribbean getaway, read on to see why St. Maarten should be on the shortlist.

Basics

St. Maarten/St.Martin is the smallest landmass shared by two nations. The border between the two sides is open and while they share many similarities there are two distinct cultures.

On the Dutch Side – St. Maarten – you’ll find bright colorful houses, wide boardwalks, and fabulous beach bars. with an electric night-life and a vibrant atmosphere.

The French side – St. Martin- is the perfect complement to its boisterous neighbor, offering a quieter relaxed vibe. Bright boats in the harbor, houses built into the cliffs, and plenty of incredible French cuisine. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the Mediterranean.

St. Maarten’s capital is Philipsburg and their currency is the Dutch Florin. On the French side of St. Martin, you’ll find they use the Euro and the capital is Marigot. However, the U.S. Dollar is generally accepted island-wide so there’s no need to change out your cash when you explore the different sides.

When to Go

Like many Caribbean Islands, St. Maarten/St. Martin experiences near-perfect temperatures year-round. Generally ranging from the low 70s to high 80s.

Dry Season: December- May

Rainy Season: May- November

Hurricane Season: June through November

High Tourist Season: January- March

Best Months (low crowds & lots of sun): January & April

Five Destinations Ideal for Group Travel

5 Ideal Destinations for Group Travel Pin

In 2022 we are all focusing on connection — finding ways to share experiences and create memories with those we’ve missed spending time with. But deciding where to go for a multi-generational family, reunion, or friend-cation group trip can be tricky. You want to find somewhere with a little something for everyone. Someplace where you can feel safe, and a destination where you can spend a lot of quality time together. And spend time soaking up everything you’ve missed over the past two years. Here are our suggestions for some small-group destinations that would be perfect for this year’s shared adventure:

Mexican All-Inclusives

Sun, beach, and warm sand for the whole family to enjoy! Plus the added luxury of all your meals and drinks included (and no one has to cook or clean!) With a big focus on relaxation, this is a great destination to reconnect. Many all-inclusives have casitas, villas, or stand-alone suites with their own pools. Which gives you a great sense of seclusion and privacy. Plus, they offer a wide range of activities for all ages and interests. You can just enjoy each other’s company without the stress of trying to get to the next landmark or attraction or figure out where to go for dinner that evening. For bigger groups, groups with younger children or those who love chilling on the beach – The Mexican Riviera has a lot to offer.

Costa Rica

With a tropical climate, plenty of private villas, and beautiful beaches, Costa Rica has a lot in common with Mexico. Costa Rica, however, has a greater sense of adventure. Offering a multitude of outdoor activities from hiking to rafting to ziplining. It’s a great destination for friends who love the outdoors and want to have an active vacation with only a few beach days thrown in. Or families with kids who love animals and would enjoy the variety of wildlife in the area. Plus, Costa Rica has a major focus on sustainability, making it a top choice for your eco-conscious friends.

Italy

Often seen as a ‘romantic destination’ (which it can be) Italy has a great advantage for groups — there’s a little bit of everything. If your group has a wide variety of interests, Italy is the place to go. History buffs, foodies, shopaholics, beach bums, and outdoorsy types alike will all find something to enjoy. You can head north to the Dolomites and the fashionably stunning lake district. Or head south into the wine-soaked hills, the small historical cities, and the beautiful beachy coastline. Cities like Rome and Florence offer history and shopping around every corner. And not too far away you’ll find breathtaking coasts and mountains. Italy is all about coming together for an aperitivo or a delicious meal to share stories about the day’s discoveries and adventures. And your accommodations can range from charming local hotels to sleek luxury resorts, city-center apartments, or private villas in the countryside.

Wales

a Castle Ruin in Conwy Wales

For those who aren’t looking for a tropical climate, Wales is great for a multi-generational road trip. The dramatic coastline and beautiful national parks offer a lot for those who love to be active (and for those who prefer a gentle stroll.) Certainly, you’ll find plenty of historic castles and quaint seaside towns to enjoy together. There’s plenty of room for kids to run around, and adults to follow. Above all, there’s something slow and relaxing about the pace of life in this intriguing countryside.

Safari

Whether you head to South Africa, Tanzania, or Kenya – going on safari with your group of friends or family is a magical journey. Share the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing incredible wildlife up close. And share stories each night over a gourmet meal back in camp — safaris offer a complete change of scenery away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Additionally, safaris are scheduled and guided to maximize the wildlife (and scenery) viewing potential, making planning your day a breeze. As a result, you have more time to focus on creating memories that you’ll be talking about for years to come. Since most safaris are group activities anyway, why not take your own private group with you?

A Costa Rican Honeymoon

Ellen and Mike normally pack a lot into their busy city-break trips. So for their November honeymoon they wanted to make sure to go somewhere relaxing. They wanted warm weather, delicious food, and the opportunity to take it easy and really enjoy each other’s company. We knew just the perfect place — Costa Rica. With a private casita at the Amor Arenal and a suite at the El Mangroove resort! And they had a perfectly relaxing time. Here are their thoughts on what it’s like to take a Costa Rican honeymoon right now.

Amor Arenal

We were picked up at the Liberia airport by Central American Tours (CAT) for our transfer by Francisco. He was really kind and acted not only as a driver but a tour guide. The drive to the Arenal area was really long (2.5 hours), so we were grateful to have some context of what we were seeing throughout the drive. He also stopped to let us get lunch on the way. We got up at 3:30 AM EST that morning, so we were running on fumes! Everyone we encountered from CAT was like this, and we were so grateful to have kind, trusted, and professional drivers from this company.

We arrived at the Amor Arenal hotel and checked into our casita. We really have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. It was a real gem for honeymooners like us! Since we stayed in this area for so long, it was also really nice to have a larger space to relax. Our casita had an outdoor space with seating and a jacuzzi, and it was totally private. We also loved how small the property was.

That, paired with the privacy aspect of all the rooms, really made you feel like you were the only people there, and the service really matched that sentiment.

Tours

Our tours in this area were great too. Our favorite was the Coffee Tour. We found this one the most interesting and interactive. It was also pretty short, so we were able to do that in the morning and go to the wet bar in the afternoon!

Our second favorite was the River Float, we saw a lot of wildlife on the tour and the format of the excursion (drifting down a river in a raft) was unique. The only con about this tour was that it was pretty far away. I know we had issues with this tour and rescheduled it many times, but the original format closer to our hotel would have been perfect!

The third tour we did of the Hike/Boat Tour/Hot Springs was our least favorite, but still enjoyable. We saw a sloth on the tour which was awesome, but it was with a bigger group. Also, given that we had a jacuzzi at our casita we didn’t necessarily need to have a similar experience at the hot springs. Still glad we did it, though!

The best food we had on the trip was in the La Fortuna downtown area for dinner. We ate at Don Rufino and Snapper’s House. Both were really excellent and well priced for the quality they served. We also enjoyed getting off the resort and seeing something new on our own!

El Mangroove

We left the Arenal area for Guanacaste with another great CAT driver (Manny). Again, he let us stop and do some errands since we didn’t have a lot of opportunities to do that in Arenal. We arrived at El Mangroove and checked into our room.

We had a beautiful suite with water views and I am so glad we did that vs. booking a standard room. We had a large outside area with seating, a hammock, and a plunge pool (it was not heated though so we did not spend a ton of time using it).

I am also glad we did not book any excursions here. It was nice to relax and do nothing! We had a few very leisurely days where we had drinks, ate, swam, and napped! This hotel did feel very “American” to us, which was truly fine. But I think we had a more authentic Costa Rican experience in Arenal.

We talked about going off the resort for dinner, but never ended up finding the energy! There were two restaurants at the resort, one was more of a beach bar (we had lunch here) and the other was more upscale and this is where we had dinner a few nights. We were really impressed with the service and offerings at both restaurants.

Final Thoughts

We purchased the at-home proctored COVID tests, and I am so happy we did! As soon as we could test, we did so in our room and we were both negative. We were really diligent throughout the trip and wore masks anytime we were with others, even though we both have the vaccine. (Mike even got the booster prior to departure). I will also say that all the Costa Ricans we encountered wore masks, despite the low infection rate, and a high percentage of the population who had received the vaccine. Maybe this is due to the touristy areas we were in, but it was very reassuring for us.

Manny was our transfer back to the airport.

We were happy to go home, but also couldn’t believe it was over! The trip was the perfect amount of time and we wouldn’t have changed a thing!

There were so many times on the trip where we said “Thank god for Ann!” or “This was a great recommendation from Ann!” You helped us book amazing hotels, tours, and transfers that I could have never done on my own. I also truly do not think I could have managed all the COVID materials, research, and documentation without you. You gave me a detailed list and breakdown of everything pre-departure, and I was still kind of overwhelmed, lol! I am so happy we had you book this trip for us and we SO look forward to doing it again!

Ellen

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

– Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!

– Carli (Italy and Spain)
