It’s All About The Details

Judging from the trip report below, Mia and Matt clearly loved their Italian honeymoon! But here’s what jumps out at me the most  —  the things that they’ll remember forever (the things that make or break the overall experience) are NOT the hotels.  Even though that’s what most clients want to focus on when we’re planning the trip. Instead, it’s the finer details. The fabulous tour guide in Rome, whom they invited to have drinks with them afterwards. The private water taxi that whisked them to the airport on their way home from Venice. The food tour in Bologna that she’s been raving about to anyone who will listen. All of that clearly overshadowed the Rome hotel that she thought was “shady”, and I’ll bet she will have forgotten the name of that hotel before her first anniversary — unless she looks back and re-reads this blog post 🙂

ROME

The hotel {Hotel Cecil} was a little shady. The location, yes, is great, but the hotel itself is weird and they were not very helpful or even nice at this hotel.  As for the breakfast in the morning – I spit up the first thing I tried into my napkin… it was disgusting! Thankfully we were not in our room long…..

Now….. as for the guided tour…

honeymoon couple and their guide in rome italy

OH My Goodness – our guide was AMAZING. yes it was a long day touring everything in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity but wow was it worth it. Matt and I lost at least 5 pounds walking around in all that heat! But she made everything fun and exciting and boy did she know her stuff… We even invited her to drinks after, she was that great we had to take a picture with her!

The train was easy to get to and our car service was waiting for us in Naples and was the nicest guy!

SORRENTO

This was the most amazing part of our trip. From the crazy city and walking around we did in Rome, what a relaxing time we had here. And OUR ROOM!!! my god, I couldn’t believe that was ours! it was unreal. It was like I was in a dream. It was the most picturesque place I have ever been to. We even did a day trip to Positano and Amalfi and omg I can’t say enough about this place, the hotel {Hotel Minerva}, the view, the people we met…. Unbelievable

FLORENCE

Ok, not going to lie, we were a little depressed to leave Sorrento for a city but what a lovely place Florence was. Our hotel {Hotel Kraft} was in a great location (right near the American Embassy and walking distance to lots of places) we did some shopping at the Mercato Centrale and had wonderful dinners every night. Our tour to Siena and Chianti was like being in a postcard. Our tour guide was amazing once again and so knowledgeable. Our wine tasting and lunch were delish and it was a memorable excursion.

As for the cooking class – MY FAVORITE!!! I already made a dish we made in Florence at home! I loved loved loved it! and Matt loved it just as much! Check out pics!

new groom learning to make pasta on his honeymoon in italy

BOLOGNA

Our hotel room was HUGE and perfectly located {Al Cappello Rosso}. I loved everything about this city, the people, the food, I would recommend bologna to everyone I meet. That is because we went on the tour of our lives to the prosciutto, cheese and balsamic factories. WHAT A DAY!!! unreal. I’m still telling people about how amazing that tour was. It was one of the many highlights of our trip!

VENICE

Our hotel {Hotel Ala} was very tiny but easy to get to and accessible to everything. I loved Venice. Again, our tour at night was awesome. The lady was a sweetheart and we learned so much about the so-called floating city. And to top it off… our water taxi to the airport was the best way to end our beautiful honeymoon.

I can’t thank you enough and have been giving your praises to everyone I see. You planned the best honeymoon for Matt and myself and every place was better than the next.

If I could suggest two things:

1 – we did an AIRBNB experience in Rome and it was amazing their company is RomaEat

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187791-d6728912-Reviews-Roma_Eat_Food_Experience-Rome_Lazio.html

what a great way to try local roman food

2 – Teatro De Sale – a dinner theater that I would go back to Florence just to go to again. worth looking into!!!!

Also – go on netflix and watch “somebody feed phil” and he does a segment on florence and venice and we went to both those restaurants! and they were amazing!!!

AGAIN…. I can’t thank you enough.

Why Not?

Katie thought she was being a little bit “extra” with her request for a honeymoon that included a cruise AND an all-inclusive resort, but I said “why not??”  As long as we could make the dates work, it sounded like a fabulous idea to me. As you can see from her note below, the solution we came up with was just right! 🙂

Hi Ann!!

We had an absolute blast on our honeymoon!

Our flight from Boston was on time and we had no problem catching a cab to bring us to the port of Miami. Once we got there, we were able to check in and enjoy the ship [Enchantment of the Seas] for a while. We weren’t allowed to go to our rooms until 1:30pm and we didn’t get our bags until around 5pm. But it was awesome to explore the ship and enjoy drinks on the deck even though we were so early.

Nassau was fun! We did a dolphin encounter and went to senor frogs. We did not have to be back on the boat until 11:30pm!

The next day was Cococay. This was great to have just a chill day. We did a jet ski excursion and chilled on the beach. It was cool that we got to use our sea pass card for everything on that island and they had a buffet set up to feed us. This was our least favorite stop just because you aren’t experiencing a new culture or country. But it was fun to relax.

The next day at Key West I had booked a snorkeling and catamaran excursion.  We walked around exploring Key West as much as we could, went to shops, went to the aquarium. We wished we had more time there. And we definitely want to go back to Key West for a trip someday! So much to do and see there!

The ship was awesome! I had no problem at all finding gluten free foods to eat. The staff was very accommodating. We tried to get on the love and marriage game show. Unfortunately there were about 10 other newlyweds on board. We all competed to audition to get on the show and Mike and I were not selected. ☹️

We booked a coach shuttle bus to take us to the Ft. Lauderdale airport through Royal Caribbean. It was only $30 per person. Our flight to Barbados went smoothly. I was very impressed with Jet Blue. For coach seats, they have plenty of leg room, tv, movies, and great snacks. And I felt that their staff was friendly.

Once we landed in Barbados, we went through customs and found the Sandals desk. They immediately gave us cold waters, and a guy named Ricardo drove us to the resort in a Mercedes.

Once we got to Sandals the staff was super friendly. Had us sit in an AC’d office, gave us cocktails. They took our bags and we got a mini tour of the resort and a staff member was explaining the locations and dress codes of restaurants. Even when we got to the room, she explained how to work all of the new technology in the room. Anything we drank out of the fridge or bar in the room was restocked everyday. The room was huge! And gorgeous! I had been to all-inclusive resorts before, but Sandals really takes the cake. They cater to your every need or want.

honeymooners in a pool at an all-inclusive in Barbados

On the resort, we went to the beach. The beach there is actually very windy and sand blows onto you. The waves are moderate size; fun for swimming. For the most part, the pools were crowded. We would save our spots by the pool around 7:30/8am every day. We were competing against everyone else who has butlers. The only annoying thing about not having a butler, at the restaurant or bar you were ordering from, it would take a little longer for you to get your order. Once, I ordered a GF pizza, they said it would be 30 minutes. Then a rush of butlers showed up. An hour later they apologized because of the rush that came in. Also, the bartenders will stop making your drink and make the butlers orders first, then go back and finish your order. So that part was a little annoying but understandable, you get what you pay for & we didn’t pay for a butler! Overall, we had a very relaxing time by the pools during the day, drank and ate too much! There were plenty of gluten free options for me. Burger buns, fries, pizza, pasta! I ate too much!

We ended up booking an excursion from a local on the beach. His name was “Captain Larry” we paid $195 for an all-day tour of Barbados. This was awesome! Our driver’s name was Kenmore. He told us he doesn’t look at his watch, he looks at our faces. Basically, we let him know when we were ready to go back to Sandals. We met so many people! We drank and ate fresh coconuts, saw Rihanna’s house, beaches, cliffs, shopped from local vendors, even ate at a local fish market. We saw monkeys all over the side of the road! So cool! We headed back to the resort at 4:30pm. We had a 7-hour tour for $195! Other couples on the resort said they booked a 3-hour tour through Sandals and paid the same amount.

The restaurants were awesome! Especially their rooftop pool & bar and their rooftop French restaurant. Amazing dinner views! The staff was amazing! If we weren’t into the shows, there were plenty of games to play in “lovers lane” the bowling alley and bar. And we honestly had some fun relaxing nights just relaxing on our patio with the soak in tub!

Overall, the trip was amazing! 10 days was not too long or too short, just perfect! We loved how much we got to do and see while on the cruise. And enjoyed all of the relaxation at Sandals.

We had an amazing honeymoon, thank you so much Ann for planning this for us and all of your helpful tips along the way!!

Thank you!

A Hui Hou, Hawaii

Hawaii has a mythical, mystical power over people. I can attest to it myself  —  I made what I thought would be my one “bucket list’ trip to the islands in 2014, went back again in 2016, and am headed there again in about two months (for what i am sure will not be my last trip. LOL) Honeymooners Joanna and Joe have clearly fallen under Hawaii’s spell too, based on the trip report below, and I am sure I’ll be helping them with some future visits 🙂

Hi Annie!

Hope you had a great weekend.  Just wanting to get back to you with feedback from our Hawaiian honeymoon!!  We truly couldn’t have had a better time & are so appreciative of all you did in putting together such a wonderful trip we’ll remember forever!

Kauai –

If we had to pick between the two islands, we were surprised, but we’d pick Kauai hands down.  We had the most amazing time here.   The natural beauty of the island was astonishing & we felt like there was a ton to see/do without having to travel too far.    All our flights were smooth, on time & very easy.  We felt like the time change really worked to our advantage.  We’d wake up early (sometimes 5:30/6:30) & use our mornings to explore the island and by midafternoon head back to the hotel to lounge by the pool before dinners.   The jeep rental was really a great suggestion.  We liked being higher up than a sedan & loved having the option to go roofless!   On Kauai, we got upgraded to a 4-Door, so we were off to a great start!

To say we loved the Koa Kea would be the understatement of the century.   Joe called the day we got home to inquire about booking for 2019 (HAHA ..one can dream!)    The hotel was above & beyond expectation.  Our room was beautiful; top floor, oceanfront, corner room.  We had a neighbor to our right, but the lanai was extremely private.  We’d usually have a drink out there before dinner & catch the sunset.  We even saw a humpback whale breach right in front of our room.  Amazing!     Some might’ve complained, but we truly didn’t mind the weather.  In the mornings it was probably in the high 60s, but by the afternoon high 70s/low 80s.  We had a short rain each day, but it created some beautiful rainbows & didn’t keep us from doing a thing!

Our first day we woke up, hopped in the jeep & almost accidentally arrived at Waimea Canyon.  We went up to the lookout & then hiked the canyon trail.  How beautiful!  We joked that even if we tried we wouldn’t gain weight because of all the activity we’d do each day.

Almost every morning when we woke up we’d walk down the road to Little Fish Coffee for breakfast.    Their acai bowls were amazing & we really enjoyed the morning walks.  We decided to do 2 ‘nicer’ dinners on each island.  While on Kauai, we did one dinner at Red Salt, the restaurant on the grounds.  It was excellent.  We very easily made a reservation the day before we went & couldn’t have been more relaxed.  We did a night at the bar with sushi too! (a little pricy, but tasty.)  The lobby/bar/restaurant area in the hotel was just gorgeous!  From the moment we arrived we were treated with nothing shy of 5-star service.   Everyone at the hotel was amazing.   With a quick call, the valet would have our car pulled up with fresh towels in the back seat.  Super easy!

Wednesday night the hotel offers free Mai Tai’s at the pool at 5, so we were sure to cash in on that offer.  They were excellent & we got a great sunset that night.    As I mentioned before, we’d tend to hit the pool in the afternoon, but never had a problem finding 2 chairs for ourselves.  Pool attendants would come right over with fresh towels.  The hotel was so quiet & relaxing.  We loved it!

new bride enjoying a waterfall on her hawaiian honeymoon

The helicopter tour of the island was a serious bucket list check.  We will remember it forever & the pictures we got are amazing.  Anyone who comes to Kauai shouldn’t miss the opportunity to do it.   We were truly able to appreciate the beauty of the Na’Pali coast & all the landscapes the island offers.  We are so happy to have done that.   Our kayak & hike to Wailea Falls was a great day too.  I don’t think we could’ve been any luckier with the weather.  If this was planned any other day of our trip we might not have been able to go because of the rains.   The day we went we had a blast.

The kayak was fun & the hike was filled with trails that had us in mud to our knees.  We loved it!   We also did a day where we drove out to Hanalei, explored some beaches along the way and then hiked into the Na’Pali coast.  What a surreal experience.  We still can’t get over the beauty.  We loved Hanalei – it was such a cute little town & worth the ~hour drive.  This side of the island had much more rain.  We tried to explore the entire island & believe that was our furthest destination.   Our last night on Kauai we had dinner at the Boat House in Koloa.  We took a free shuttle that ran on tips, 15 mins down the road.  The dinner was excellent and the restaurant was beautiful.  That night we didn’t get a clear sunset, but we still couldn’t have been happier with the experience.   It was a nice way to celebrate.  We truly didn’t have a bad meal our entire trip!  Some of the other places we ate while here included…  Right off the plane, a stop to Times Market for Poke Bowls (we went back), lunch at The Dolphin Restaurant in Hanalei, a night of Pizza from Pizzeta in Koloa (they delivered right to the hotel), a food truck in Lihue across from Sunshine Helicopter & fish tacos from Pacos Tacos.  (We’re big fish fans!)  They were all superb.

At 1pm that Saturday, our phones went off with the flood advisory.  We felt extremely lucky to get out of Kauai an hour later before the storm really hit.  The next day they got 27 inches of rain in 24 hours.  If our trip planned for Kauai the second week we never would’ve had the same experience here.  Our 5 days on Kauai we above and beyond all expectation.  We talk about it daily how much we want to go back – Amazing, amazing, amazing!!

MAUI

Our flight over to Maui was quick & easy.  No issues & we were grateful to miss the storming in Kauai!  The weather in Maui was amazing every day – 82/83 everyday, all day, no rain.  We had some amazing sunsets!  Again, we loved having the jeep & really put the miles on.   It might be because we came off a high of being at the Koa Kea, but we didn’t love the Hyatt Regency.   The hotel was really dated, not as clean & anytime we walked around the grounds we were heckled to sit in a presentation to buy into their time shares.  (Sometimes aggressively) Housekeeping didn’t turn the beds over, the sheets were just pulled up from the day before.    Anything probably would be, but the Hyatt was more stressful than our time on Kauai… from arriving, dealing with hotel staff, parking, getting towels, etc.   We had the free breakfast & went the first morning, but then didn’t end up going back.  The line for a table was long, the buffet wasn’t great & there were tons of people.  The hotel felt a bit like a vacation factory.   Luckily, we really enjoyed exploring both islands so didn’t spend a ton of time at the resort.  We tried to see as much of the island as possible.   Going back to Maui we’d probably pick to stay in Paia or Wailea.    It seemed to be about an hour drive to a lot of our destinations & the traffic here was much heavier.    Regardless – we had an amazing time!  Our first day we explored the North East side of the island & did some wild driving (practice for Hana!)  We snagged some great banana bread alongside the road & tried to soak up as much of the culture as possible.  We found a beach we loved just a short drive from the hotel – Ka’anapali Beach – beautiful, quite & convenient!

For our first ‘nicer’ dinner here we ate at Mama’s Fish House in Paia.  My cousin recommended it months before going, so I made a reservation a while back.  It’s a good thing because they didn’t have dinner availability for over a month out.  It was absolutely, amazing – perfect for a special occasion dinner.  The view, food, service & ambiance were outstanding.    On Maui we tended to eat a little more commercially because it was convenient.

We absolutely loved our Kayak with Sea Turtles.   It ended up that Joe & I were the only ones in our group, so our guide Mikey was able to give us a lot of attention.  We saw some amazing sea creatures – sea turtles, manta ray, (a pregnant momma) sharks (little scary 😊), an octopus, eels and some wild fish.  Such an awesome experience we are so glad we got to do!    While on that end of the island we drove down & checked out the lava flows (worth the 10 mins down the road).  While here we also got a food truck lunch (JAWZ – Amazing tacos!) where the woman gave us a recommendation for a beach off the beaten path – Oneuli Beach.  Beautiful black sand & virtually ours – it was so quiet.

beautiful ocean sunset on a Hawaiian honeymoon

We knew in advance we wanted to drive the Road to Hana. On our first day exploring we ran into someone who recommended getting an app called GPSy.  It was the best $6.99 we spent the whole trip.  The app guided us along the way calling out key stopping points, bathrooms, best food stops & invaluable historic information about the towns we were driving through.  We were so glad to have it.  The drive took us about 12 hours.  Having the notice to start early was key.  We left the hotel around 7am & got back about 7pm.  It was a long day, but we are so glad we did it!  We ended up driving past Hana to Haleakala National Park where we did another hike to a waterfall that was just beautiful through a bamboo forest.  Surreal!   We saw the Pools of O’hea, black sand beaches & tons of amazing waterfalls.

For our last night in Maui & our second special dinner we decided to end with a luau.  The Hyatt recommended going to theirs, but after checking it out we didn’t think it was our speed.  We did a little research & found one called The Feast at Lele about 10 minutes away right on the beach.   It was $300 for the two of us with unlimited drinks, 4 Polynesian courses, with our own waiter, private table & an amazing show.  There were about 150 other people dining.  We couldn’t have had a better time.  The idea of a 500-person buffet at some of the other locations didn’t entice us quite as much.  We felt like this was such a special way to end our honeymoon.  (4 thumbs up!)

We are so, so grateful to have had such an amazing time in such a beautiful place.  We’ve made memories we’ll remember & cherish forever.  We’ve both now caught a little bit of a travel bug!!   If you’d like, we’d be happy to share pictures of our trip!   If we can provide any more detail or information on any part of our time away, don’t hesitate to let us know!  We’re an open book & any information we can provide to help in further planning we’re happy to share.

Thank you so, so much Annie!

Beach Bliss in Barbados

A recent survey of more than 70,000 travelers from around the world ranked Barbados as the #1 destination in terms of overall satisfaction. That is high praise indeed, given that the poll included more than 140 popular vacation spots, from the Caribbean to Africa, Asia and more. And yet, despite the fact that it’s right our in our own backyard, Barbados generally isn’t top of mind for Americans. Perhaps, after reading Carissa’s trip report, that will change 🙂

Carissa and Travis came to me for some help with a last-minute honeymoon. They wanted low-key, low-fuss, easy-to-reach, adults-only, all-inclusive, and good food. I think that the beautiful new Waves Hotel and Spa in Barbados delivered on all counts!

Waves Hotel and Spa was spectacular, exactly what we needed!  I don’t know where to start.  The place was VERY relaxing, clean, and well run.  The staff was friendly and got to know us by name.  They would ask what we did that day and seemed to make sure we had a relaxing time.  The staff kept the grounds very well maintained and cleaned.  Waitstaff were quick to clear away empty plates, glasses, etc.  which added to the cleanliness factor.  There was a smoking section under the umbrellas and although I saw people smoking there,we never saw cigarette butts or dirty ashtrays.  Nor did we see any drink toothpicks or straws on the floor or littered about.  Our room was cleaned daily and always felt welcoming and refreshing thanks to the quiet AC.

balcony overlooking the ocean in Barbados

Being in a smaller resort, we got to know other guests by sight and would chat in the common areas or in passing. Vacation friends!  We didn’t talk about work or even get last names, it was great.  Older crowd, mainly British but a few younger couples.  Not the place for late night parties.  At about 8 pm there was live music (a musician or 2) and people sat around in the common living area (very open floor plan which was great) and had a drink and mingled.  On Monday nights there was a limbo show but we went to bed before she started.

We visited Crystal Cove for lunch one day and decided that Waves was more our style.  It was nice but I appreciate the spa feel of the open layout of Waves, the primary color palette of blue, sand, light grey, with pops of coral.  Side by side example of the service:  While at the beach at Crystal Cove, a waitress came around offering little plastic cups of grapes.  Later she came by with a tray of assorted mixed drinks and juices.  At Waves, we were offered frozen grapes on a bamboo skewer served with tongs.  A few minutes later our specific drink orders were taken.  But in the meantime, would we like a cool towel?

With our fancy room we each got 4 spa vouchers!  The vouchers could be used for complimentary treatments or could go towards an upgraded service.  We did both.  The spa was great and the ladies working there were nice.  We had pedicures, facials, massages, and Travis got a body scrub.  I chose to forgo the scrub, I had one recently.  The spa, Asian fusion restaurant, and the big adult pool was located across the street from the main building on the ocean.  It was easy to go back and forth.

luxurious pool and spa at the Waves Hotel & Resort barbados

The food was good although nothing to write home about.  We liked the elegant casual dinner attire requirement.  It got people out of their beachwear.  In addition to the 2 restaurants, there is a coffee shop (air conditioned if you want) which we wish was open after dinner.  We did get sandwiches from there they day we left.

Unfortunately due to high surf conditions all water sports (and turtle adventure) were cancelled during our stay.  Management kept hoping that “tomorrow” will be better but they never gave us false hope.  The waves were so epic that staff was out there taking pictures.  They lost a lot of sand/beach.  We were able to walk to Crystal Cove along the beach at low tide one day and only had to navigate a few high water areas.  I think as more sand went out, it got more treacherous.  Surfers on the West coast of Barbados was a novel sight, we enjoyed watching them every day.

One morning we took the yellow reggae bus to Bridgetown.  Meh.  It was OK.  Interesting architecture but nothing I really needed to buy.  While walking around we were asked by taxi drivers if we wanted a ride back to the boat. hahaha.  When we said we weren’t on the boat, they offered tours of the island.

The FunJet rep met us Tuesday morning and offered up a variety of activities but we declined.  They were however very good with their shuttle service to and from the airport.

This was the perfect place for reading, catching up on naps, and doing a whole lot of nothing.  If we had stayed longer we may have ventured more into the rest of the country.  Eating and resting takes up a lot of energy.

Thanks again for figuring out exactly what we needed.  We would love to go back to Barbados and I certainly got accustomed to the luxury all-inclusive lifestyle.

Any questions?  Have I missed anything??

Best regards,

Carissa

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
