Family Reunions

Summer’s here, and that means there will be lots of family reunions coming up over the next two months. It’s the perfect time of year to get together somewhere warm and sunny and spend some quality time with relatives that you just don’t get to see often enough.

I’m skipping the “warm and sunny” part this year and heading to Alaska instead, but I will be traveling with friends and family, including my mom, my brother, my sister, her in-laws, etc. In previous years, we’ve done mini-reunions in Cape Cod, Long Beach Island (NJ), and even Poland (one of my brothers lives in Krakow!) but this one will be very special because I’m introducing my family to cruising. And I know they are going to love it!

If you’ve been thinking about getting the whole family together this summer, check out this very timely article from USA Today on “Ten Great Places for a Family Reunion“.  Or, just give me a call — I can not only suggest the perfect location, but take care of the travel arrangements as well. Just don’t call during the first two weeks of July, as I’ll be somewhere in the wilds of Alaska!

Excuse me, can I return this vacation?

Have you ever purchased something online and been disappointed when it arrived? Maybe it turned out to be the wrong color, or it didn’t fit, or it just wasn’t exactly what you had pictured when you saw it on that web site.  With a sweater, you can just return it … but what do you do if it’s a vacation that you had purchased?? Most people are pretty disappointed when they find out that they’ve wasted vacation time and money on something that’s not quite what they expected.

I just came across a great column that describes some of these travel mishaps and mistakes that can happen (recognize any?) and reinforces the fact that using a travel agent could have helped to avoid all of them. It’s true what they say … “Without a travel agent, you’re on your own”.

Ahhh….spas

Spa afficionados know that vacations and spa treatments go together like peanut butter and jelly.  Nothing enhances the “get away from it all” effect of a vacation like a massage, body wrap or a facial. Or, better yet, all three!  So it’s no surprise that travel authority Conde Nast Magazine has, for some years now, been publishing their ratings of the best hotel-based, resort-based, and cruise ship spas worldwide.

The 2010 results are in, and the rankings for spas in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean can be found in the April issue (or online)  There are some perennial winners of course, in the usual locales you’d expect (California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Bermuda, etc.) but it’s interesting to note some of the more unexpected accolades.

For instance, in the cruise ship spa category, the top ranking goes to a very mass-market ship — Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas — and not to one of the premium lines like Crystal or Regent. In fact, more than half of the ships in the top 20 are from mainstream lines like Royal Caribbean, Princess, Holland America and Disney Cruise Line.

When it comes to hotel spas, it’s nice to see that, in among the Ritz-Carltons and the Four Seasons of the world, there are some local New England inns like the Mayflower Inn in Connecticut and the White Barn Inn in Maine. And when it comes to Caribbean resort spas, it’s not just the boutiquey adults-only properties that are achieving high marks —  there are also two Marriotts in the top 20 (in Aruba and St. Kitts).

What this all means to me is that spas are becoming more and more mainstream and accessible, and that travelers are expecting (and demanding) some pampering and relaxation on ANY vacation. Not just when they’re on a special romantic “escape” with their significant other.

If you want some help planning a vacation that includes a little spa time, let me know. I’m more than happy to test out the treatments wherever I go. It’s all in the name of  research, of course 🙂

Caribbean Villas for the Holidays

Haven’t made your plans for the December holidays yet?

Thinking about running away with friends and family to sit on a beach in the Caribbean this year?

It’s not too late!

Normally, by this time of year, you’d be hard-pressed to find availability for Caribbean villas over the holidays, and any that were still available would be requiring a two-week minimum stay. But not this year.

I’ve been receiving promotional emails from several of my villa vendors touting last-minute availability (and decent pricing) for 3-, 4- and 5-bedroom villas in Turks and Caicos, Barbados, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and the USVI.

Just imagine…your own private beachfront hideaway, surrounded by your closest friends/family, with staff (if you want it) to do the cooking and cleaning. That sounds like a holiday to me!

If you’re interested, don’t delay. Give me a call today.

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
