An Enchanting Escape

Sometimes, when you don’t have time for a full-fledged, week-long vacation, a quick getaway will do — as long as it’s to the right destination! My clients just returned from a four-night “escape” to the Enchantment Resort in Sedona, and it sounds like it definitely did the trick!

Hi Ann –

We absolutely loved Sedona and have already discussed what we will do/see “next time we go.” You were a major reason why we were able to stay at such an amazing resort for a relatively reasonable rate – thanks so much!

We ended up getting an upgrade on the rental car – I guess I should have consulted Mike before reserving an economy car – hahaha — and the ride from the airport to Sedona was beautiful – the suspense building at every turn. Mike and I were very pleased with the accommodations at Enchantment. We especially liked the mimosa brunch we indulged in our first morning. This brunch occurs every Sunday, reservations and a hearty appetite required. What seemed to be endless food choices filled the dining room of the Yavapai restaurant while mimosas were poured freely. The best part was the outdoor seating at the restaurant where it was encouraged to sit on the same side of the booth (awkward normally) so that all could enjoy the breath-taking views.

Our days were spent hiking, eating, or sitting pool-side with a book. We ate all meals at one of the three restaurants on the Enchantment property. All were within walking distance but if you prefer, golf carts driven by Enchantment employees will gladly pick you up curb-side. The food at the restaurants (Yavapai and Mii Amo Spa Cafe in particular) were pricey but we couldn’t take ourselves away from the beauty of the property to eat elsewhere. We hiked every day and a few of the trails were right off of the Enchantment property, which meant that we didn’t have to hop in the car to get there. The resort also had mountain bikes available for guests’ use, along with bottled waters and helmets. Mike and I ventured out on the trails our last day and took in the views for one last time. This ended up being Mike’s favorite part of the trip and he thinks he may have found a new hobby in mountain-biking as a result. As far as my favorite part of the trip, I think the mountain biking was a tie with the brunch.

As far as advice for people traveling to Sedona – Enchantment was a great choice for places to stay. It is set apart from downtown, so it is very quiet. The downside (or plus for me since Mike’s iPhone rarely had a good connection) is that cell phone use is pretty limited.  Enchantment offers a very thorough menu of daily activities ranging from yoga classes, to mountain biking excursions to wine tastings. Take advantage, as they are all part of the resort fee.

I have attached a few pictures although they hardly do the red rocks any justice.

Mike and I are hoping to make a trip to Italy next…although it may be another year or so before that happens. Until then our memories of wonderful Sedona will bring smiles to our faces.

Thanks for everything Ann! We look forward to your assistance as we plan our next adventure.

Majestic Elegance, Punta Cana

Some great clients just returned from a romantic “escape” to the Majestic Elegance resort in Punta Cana and were kind enough to share their candid feedback, photos, and some tips/advice for other couples considering a similar vacation.

Hi Ann!

We had such a great time.  Even though we came home to a bunch of snow, we really enjoyed every minute of our vacation.

The advance planning was great, and we have nothing but positive things to say.  We were provided all the information we needed to make our trip a success! It was very helpful that you told us about the $10 per person fee that they charge when you get there.  It helped us to be more prepared so we knew what to expect.

Our flights were great. Since we only took carry-ons, I thought it may be valuable to know that… I took a curling iron with me in my carry-on.  When we checked in to leave at the Punta Cana airport, the Dominican Republic security does not allow you to carry on hairdryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc.  So I had the option of checking my bag for $29 or relinquishing my curling iron.  I gave them the curling iron since it cost less than $29.  But, it was kind of disappointing that I had to throw it away.  This was surprising, and I thought it would be helpful information that you could pass along to other clients of yours.

We took a cab upon arrival as we didn’t see the shuttle right away and found it difficult to locate the correct person.  We took a taxi to the resort for US $45.   We also did that because we didn’t want to get put in a shuttle that was going to multiple resorts and it would take even longer to get to our resort.  Which turned out to be true –when we met another couple who was also with FunJet and said it took them an hour and half to get to the resort, when our cab ride was only 30 minutes.

Going home, our concierge told us that the FunJet representative would be there between 3 and 5pm and when I arrived around 3:45, they still had not arrived to help me arrange to shuttle to the airport.  I called the phone number you put on the itinerary for the FunJet service line (thank you so much for providing that!) and was able to confirm our shuttle to go home.  The shuttle was there early and we had no trouble getting to the airport at a time convenient for us.

The Majestic Elegance was wonderful.  It was very clean and well kept, from the rooms to the lobby and all restaurants, bathrooms, etc.  The staff was very nice, friendly and accommodating.  We were very happy with the resort staff who did the games, and events each day (called the “animation team”) The shows each night and the activities during the day were great.  We were very happy with the resort overall and would recommend it to other people.

There was some confusion about the Elegance Club Junior Suite, in the adults-only section of the resort.  At first, we were brought to the wrong room, a room with two small double beds (they looked almost like twin beds).  I told them we were in the wrong room and they said they would push the beds together and make it just like a king.  But then they took us to a different room with a king bed.  The room did not have all the things listed on the website.  We didn’t have robes in our room and had to ask 3 times before they were delivered to us.  There was no “selection of pillows” or aromatherapy stuff or slippers as they stated.  However, the room was always cleaned when we requested and the bed was turned down every night for us.

The food was very good.  The buffet style restaurant was typical, but the steakhouse, Italian, Japanese and French restaurants were excellent.  The food was delicious and we were very happy with those restaurants.  The breakfast buffet was very good and there was basically only one restaurant with a buffet option for lunch if you were in your bathingsuit/cover-ups.

We decided not to do any excursions.  We went parasailing and used the company that had a hut on the beach right at our resort.  We were very happy with that experience and it worked out just as they told us.

Here are some tips/advice for other clients considering a similar “escape”:

I have stayed at other all-inclusive resorts and it seemed that tipping the staff was a lot more visible and accepted at this resort than others I have stayed at.  I would also recommend that you get more familiar with Spanish phrases/words for the trip.  The staff spoke some English, but many spoke little to no English.  Taxi drivers also spoke little to no English, so if you were familiar with the language, your trip would be smoother – and it’s fun to try and speak a new language.  They also appreciate that you are trying to speak their language, even if it’s not that good.

Thanks again, Ann!

A new “moon” is rising

I’m working with some repeat clients who have taken full advatange of just about all the “moons” there are — a minimoon to Cape Cod right after their wedding…a fantastic honeymoon in Hawaii a few months later…and now they’re back to plan a babymoon in the White Mountains before their firstborn arrives in February. Since I’m all about finding fantastic reasons to take a vacation, this latest “moon”  has me thinking…

Most of the “moons” you hear about right now are clustered around that 20’s and 30’s age range when you’re getting engaged, married, and becoming parents for the first time. And those are all great reasons to take a celebratory vacation. But I would argue that those of us in our 40’s and beyond are even MORE in need of a special getaway now and then. So here are my suggestions for some additional “moons” that I’d like to see take hold in popular culture. Feel free to add to the list!

  • Middle School Moon — When your kids are hitting that terrible hormonal age and the two of you really, really need a break from them (for their safety and your sanity)
  • Menopause Moon — When you yourself are hitting that terrible hormonal age and you really, really need to get away with your girlfriends for a little while and forget about husbands, jobs, kids, etc.
  • Mortgage Moon — When you finally write that last check to the bank and want to run off to Tahiti with your spouse to celebrate

Turns out money CAN buy happiness, but only if you spend it correctly

According to a recent article in the New York Times, more money does not equate to greater happiness if that money is then spent on acquiring more things…but it DOES make people measurably happier if spent on experiences. Like, for example, a vacation!   Of course, I’ve known this all along, but it’s nice to see that experts now agree:

One major finding is that spending money for an experience — concert tickets, French lessons, sushi-rolling classes, a hotel room in Monaco — produces longer-lasting satisfaction than spending money on plain old stuff.  ” ‘It’s better to go on a vacation than buy a new couch’ is basically the idea,” says Professor Dunn…

According to the study, when we spend money on material things like cars, electronics and clothes, the pleasure is very short-lived; we soon move on to “needing” more and more things to keep the excitement going. When we invest in experiences, however, the happiness is long-lasting. We anticipate the experience, we live the experience, and then we get to reminisce and re-live it over and over again.

The other very exciting finding in the study was that you don’t need to blow it all on one big vacation in order to find peak happiness. A bunch of three-day weekends spread across the year might be even better for you than one two-week summer vacation. So, if you’d like to bring a little more happiness into your life, give me a call — we’ll get you started on a “vacation maintenance plan” 🙂

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
