Enjoy your own little piece of paradise

Ever dreamed about running off to a deserted island in the Caribbean, without phones, TVs or internet? It’s easier than you think… and you certainly don’t have to give up ALL the creature comforts to “get away from it all”. Check out this trip report from my honeymooners who just returned from Palm Island, in the Grenadines.

Hi Ann first of all we wanted to thank you so much — we had an amazing time!

The destination was beyond amazing! The views were out of this world with crystal clear waters.  The minute you land on Union Island, the Palm Island staff was so attentive grabbing our bags and driving us to the dock where we took the 5 minute boat ride to Palm Island.  As soon as we got to the dock on Palm Island we were greeted by the general manager and staff with a glass of champagne!! They walked us right to our room and let us check-in the next morning … giving us time to relax and unwind after a full day of traveling!! 🙂

The resort is only about 43 rooms but I’m sure only half were occupied … or so it felt that way.  There were times where Angel and I were the only ones on the beach! It was perfect! Never once did you feel like one place was crowed. There was also a great mix of guests …there were honeymooners of course.. but there were mostly couples on their anniversary, or simply on a vacation getaway.  It’s so quiet and barely no one around that I was afraid that Angel would get bored… since there are no tv’s or wi-fi (they have one really really slow computer in the rec room) … we made sure to bring a couple of books and also took bikes that the resort offers free of charge all around the island! There is definitely no night life on Palm Island …dinner is over by 9:30-10 and I believe the bar shuts down at 10:30.  Angel and I were okay with that … since we were getting up early to make sure we didn’t miss breakfast! (which ends at 10am and lunch doesn’t start till 12!)  The food and drinks were amazing!!!! Lunch was 3 courses and dinner was 5! I have never been to a resort where the staff greets everyone by their first names. They also put the napkins on your laps every time you sit to have a meal! (I know it silly to mention but the attention to details were beyond our expectations).  The chef also greeted everyone during dinner every single night!

When we left Palm Island, I actually was missing the staff — everyone was beyond amazing! They were so personable that we built such great relationships with each of them during a short stay.  They had such strong work ethics that you saw them bright and early serving breakfast and you saw the same people late at night serving dinner and never once did they complain or showed that they were tired! Our room was also nice, really spacious and clean all the time! The turndown service also really surprised us! It was really neat how they would leave a note every night on our pillows after each turndown service.

During our stay at Palm Island we enjoyed the sunset cruise on a sail boat which we loved … all the sunsets were amazing! We also had to do dinner at the well known heart shaped palm tree it was sooooo romantic! Loved it! We also did a half day excursion to the Tobago Cays where we took a sail boat, swam with turtles and went snorkeling around the reefs while there was a bbq cooking for us. What really amazed me about the staff about Palm Island was how genuine they were… I don’t know how to swim but I got to experience swimming with the turtles because one of the guys took me out! He gave me a vest and made sure he held my hand the entire time so that Angel could also enjoy himself and not have to worry about me! I was able to go to deep waters and see all the amazing turtles around the cays! I would remember that forever!

Barbados was equally as beautiful.  The experience was different than Palm Island… the Hilton was huge and tons of people … didn’t get greeted by first names or by the general manager … which we knew but I was missing Palm Island and the staff.  The first day we got to Barbados we headed to Bridgetown and did some shopping .. we found it a little overwhelming and couldn’t find any local cheap places to eat so we headed back to the hotel.  We found Barbados to be really expensive more expensive than we anticipated. They are known for their great foods/restaurants but almost all of them had dinner prefix’s starting at 95 US dollars a person for two course meals!! 🙁  The next day we decided to stay in and do a beach day.  For our last dinner however we decided to do Harbour Lights which is a dinner show at a nightclub near the hotel. The hotel provides a shuttle to and from which was awesome.  Angel and I found it reasonable since it was only 85 US dollars a person including a buffet dinner and free drinks all night and the show was soooo much fun! It was actually a great time …they had fire eaters, limbo dancers, a band etc. … we loved it and it was a great way to end an amazing honeymoon!!

Again, thank you so much for all your help! All the traveling/paperwork went really smoothly! Never had a problem! 🙂

Somewhere, Over the Rainbow…

My clients are the best! I love that they take the time to send me such detailed feedback (and photos) after their trips, along with tips for other clients who might be considering a similar “escape”.  Check out this helpful trip report from Joely and Jim, who enjoyed a romantic honeymoon in Hawaii.

So my idea of fun is doing lots of relaxing activities, drinking fabulous drinks, eating fabulous food, and getting spa treatments! I know I sound like a primadonna, but what can I say! I’m not much into athletic type of activities or long tours, etc. I just wanna chill, eat, drink and be merry. So that being said, my honeymoon was skewed towards that!

Here is my synopsis:

Honolulu: We had a nice time there and enjoyed our hotel right on the ocean. The restaurants and housekeeping were very good at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. We only spent 3 days there and used it to adjust to the time change for the most part. There was tons of shopping right next to the hotel. We tried to do Pearl Harbor and caught a taxi there but it was a 4 hour wait to see the Arizona memorial so we just walked around briefly and left without seeing the Arizona (which is the main attraction there). My favorite activity in Honolulu was the Hole in the Wall Food Tour by Hawaii Food Tours. This is a great activity for foodies or people that aren’t looking to be very active. Two tour guides take you around the parts of Honolulu where locals eat and let you sample tons of Hawaiian specialty foods. The point is to get away from where tourists are and get a real look at Hawaiian food. So we sampled the best Manapua (delicious Hawaiian calzone type things)! Ate delicious local desserts, etc. The tour guide even made us a special cocktail while we were in China town. This should be booked a month in advance if anyone wants to do it. Hawaii Food Tours also has an evening tour where you go to 1-2 sit down restaurants.

Then we went to Kauai. In Kauai we rented a mustang convertible which was fun! The weather was overcast the whole time which was a slight bummer but I still loved Kauai. The Sheraton we ended up staying at was very nice, right on swimmable ocean, and had a pretty pool that was recently renovated. The restaurant on site was great too. They had an awesome breakfast buffet and great dinner meals as well. We did ziplining in Kauai which was definitely a fun time! I’m glad I tried that and I would recommend it. The one mistake we made was booking all of our activities on the north side of the island but we were staying on the south side so it got exhausting with all the back and forth driving. My favorite part of my honeymoon was here in Kauai when we had dinner at the St. Regis Princeville Resort at the Makana Terrace restaurant (I think that is what it’s called). The view at dinner was absolutely AMAZING!!! The hotel is built into the side of a mountain and overlooks the bay and other mountains. Two rainbows were in the sky and it was just the most peaceful, beautiful scene I’ve ever been in. The restaurant is very expensive (side of lobster mash potatoes was $18) but I felt it was money well spent since it was our honeymoon. Tip: This resort is part of Sheraton’s network so I heard that if you stay at the Sheraton, you can use the St. Regis pool facilities as well. The resort is gorgeous and the design of their pool is beautiful too, so it would have been fun to spend the day at the pool there. We also did the Napali Coast tour. I definitely recommend people do it by boat (versus kayak or motorized kayak). Waters can be rough. The view was gorgeous again and we stopped to snorkel. They served lunch and breakfast on board, as well as alcoholic drinks. It was nice to get out on a boat and see the beautiful caves along the Napali Coast cliffs. I don’t like to get in salt water so I just stayed on the boat while everyone snorkeled and that was just fine with me. Very relaxing I’d say!

We then flew to Wailea, Maui. We stayed at the Marriot. It was a nice hotel, but the food wasn’t that great there. I thought the adults pool was relaxing. We were within walking distance to the Shops at Wailea and several restaurants so we didn’t necessarily need a car there. I loved eating at Longhi’s where they served pizza bread before dinner arrived. So delicious. I loved the boardwalk in front of our hotel here. It stretched through the Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, and beach. It was a great place to take walks or go for a run. In Maui we visited the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm. It was very cute and quaint. They make their own award-winning goat cheeses. So we pulled up, got a charcuterie and ate it under a covered area. It was relaxing and the food was fresh. Goats were roaming around. Enjoyed that! We also did the Old Lahaina Luau which we enjoyed. It was a very gourmet experience and they offered wine and beer pairings with each course. I thought that was cool! Every one of their 4 courses focused on a specific Pacific region: Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, etc. The show was great as well and we had great seats because we booked early (like a month in advance). We also did a sunset cruise out of Lahaina. It wasn’t really that great but hard to complain when you’re on a boat in Hawaii right?! Again, we booked two activities in Lahaina but we were staying in Wailea so I’d suggest people not do that. It’s a lot of driving back and forth and a little tiring. We also did the Road to Hana which is beautiful as you know but I suggest people wear sneakers because hiking to the waterfalls is muddy! Flip flops are not the best for that.   Next time I’m in Maui I definitely want to stay at the Grand Wailea. That hotel looked out of this world!

So there you have it. I know it’s a bit discombobulated but I hope it helps! I think next time we stay two weeks we’d just do two islands so that we can have enough time to relax and do and see all that we want to on those islands.

Thanks for your help!

Wine, whiskey and waterfalls in the Finger Lakes

As a native New Yorker, I’m certainly aware of the Finger Lakes area, and have driven through it en route to Niagara Falls, but I have to admit I did not know much about it as a tourist destination of its own until my clients Corey and Jen decided to honeymoon there. In putting together their itinerary, I discovered all sorts of great places to stay, eat, and explore. And it sounds like they loved every minute of it! Thank you Corey and Jen for opening my eyes to a fantastic vacation destination that’s practically in my own back yard.

Ann,

Thanks for helping out with our honeymoon.  It was great!  Here’s my review of everything we did and hopefully this helps you out when other clients consider the Finger Lakes.  This area is a true gem that isn’t that well known around here.

In Canandaigua, we stayed at a quaint lakeside bed and break called Onanda by the Lake.  The owner, Linda, was a great host and made amazing breakfasts in the morning for her guests.  The rooms were immaculate and had a nice sitting room with a lake view or a garden view of the property.  Linda was very helpful with giving us ideas of what to do and where to eat.

We arrived later in the day on Sunday and on the first night we took a dinner cruise on the Lady Canandaigua.  It’s an old Mississippi River paddle boat that use to be transportation on Canandaigua Lake.  The food was average at best but the atmosphere of the sunset cruise was really nice.  On Monday, we went wine tasting at three different vineyards; Arbor Hill Grapery, Inspire Moore , and Heron Hill Vineyard.   Arbor Hill and Inspire Moore were our favorites.  We ate lunch at the restaurant at the Inspire Moore vineyards called Roots.  Roots is an all organic restaurant that was absolutely delicious.  In the afternoon, we relaxed at Onanda Park.  Onanda Park is less than a 5 minute walk from Onanda by the Lake.  It has a swimming area and comfy Adirondack chairs to relax in.  For dinner that night we went to the New York Wine and Culinary center.  Here we were able to try wine and beer from all regions of New York.  They had tastings of white wine, red wine, dessert wine, beer, and distilled drinks.  The food was all locally grown in New York, much of the vegetables were grown at the gardens at the center.  On Tuesday, we hiked the hiking path in the woods behind Onanda by the Lake.  The path was a good walk through the woods and a ravine that was dry when we were there but might look better if it had rained more during the season.  We then went to lunch at Simply Crepes on Main Street in Canandaigua.  We had a delicious salad and then ordered the best dessert crepes that we have ever had.  Downtown Canandaigua had some nice quaint shops that we spent a few hours walking around and shopping.  After shopping, we went wine tasting at Hazlett Red Cat vineyards.  This was one of our favorite vineyards in the Finger Lakes area.  For dinner on Tuesday night we ate at MacGregor’s Grill & Tap Room.  They had a great selection of beer, hard ciders, and wine as well as amazing food.   The prices here were very reasonable for the amount of food we got.

On Wednesday, we packed up from Onanda by the Lake and headed to Watkins Glen.  On the way there we stopped at the Belhurst Castle vineyard and walked around the castle.  The castle and the grounds are really nice looking but we weren’t fans of their wine.  There also wasn’t a tour of the castle as the rooms are used as a hotel and restaurants.   Once we arrived in Watkins Glen, we walked down the main street that was by the hotel to an old general store for nice ice cream and old fashion candy.  They also had a cool old pinball machine that was playing for a while.  After that we went to the Watkins Glen State Park and hiked the gorge and waterfall trail.  This was absolutely beautiful and would recommend this to anyone who ever visits the area.  That night we went to dinner at an Italian restaurant called Jerlando’s Pizza Co.   The food there was delicious and fresh.   After dinner we took a romantic walk on the Seneca Lake Boardwalk and the breakwall of the harbor during sunset.  The sunset was really nice here.

The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel was amazing.  The beds were comfortable and the rooms were extremely nice and clean.  The people who run the hotel are all extremely nice and helpful with anything you want.  On Thursday, we took a wine tour with a private town car.  The tour was from Quality Wine Tours.  The driver was really nice and knowledgeable.   We were able to visit 7 vineyards and 1 distillery during our 6 hour tour.  We visited the Finger Lakes Distilling which had really good gin, vodka, and bourbon whiskey.  We also did wine tastings at Pompous Ass Winery, Standing Stone Vineyards, Penguin Bay, Miles Estate, JR Dill, Atwater Estate, and Red Newt Wine Cellar.  We also ate lunch at the Red Newt vineyard.  We got a cheese platter as an appetizer and fresh sandwiches for lunch.  The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel setup the wine tour and was able to give us a few free passes and other discounts to these vineyards.  The hotel had a nice restaurant that we were able to eat outside.  The food was good but the service was slow.  We also got to enjoy the pool and hot tub for an hour that night.  On Friday, we traveled to Corning to visit the Corning Museum of Glass.  We made our own glass Christmas ornaments and also made glass sculptures.  The museum was really cool and they had a great gift shop with many types of glass and glass products.  For dinner on Friday night we ate outside by the lake at Blue Pointe Grille.  The food here was delicious but the area was a big buggy.  They had live music too by the patio.  That night, we also went out for drinks at the hotel bar.  We sat by the firepit and relaxed and drank local beverages.   On Saturday, we packed up and headed home.  Our drives there and home took around 6 hours with one stop each time.

The honeymoon was great and there was lots more to do in the area that we didn’t have time to get to.  There are lots of different waterfalls and gorges to hike, the Watkins Glen motor speedway if you are into cars and racing would be a good place to visit as well.  There seemed to be a few golf courses in the area as well.  Also, from Canandaigua it is a 2 hour and 15 minute drive to Niagara Falls and a 90 minute drive to Letchworth state park (the Grand Canyon of the east).

All Smiles In Aruba

My adorable honeymooners Helen and Brian just returned from the Bucuti Beach Resort in Aruba, and it sounds like it was the perfect honeymoon “escape”!

Hi Ann

How are you?? The wedding was awesome, thanks….but the honeymoon was the best!!! Brian and I want to thank you for all your help with planning our trip…..Bucuti was unbelievable..we couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend our honeymoon….the sunsets were absolutely beautiful!!! We did a semi-submarine excursion which was in the high-rise end of the island and we were soo glad we stayed at Eagle Beach with no kids and peace and quiet =) The staff at Bucuti were awesome…we ended up upgrading to the tara suite for 3 nights which was amazing!!! The weather was perfect…it rained 2 times but for no more than 10 mins and we were at the beach right after. We did the sunset dinner at the pirates nest and the view and service was unbelievable…..we also did the ATV tour excursion which took us to all the main parts of the island so we were able to see and learn about the history of the island. I’ve attached a few photos…..if you need anything else from me let me know. Again thanks for all your help….look forward to booking my next trip with you =)

Helen

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
