A “delicious” honeymoon on the Spice Island

Honeymooners Kyle and Keith just returned from a romantic honeymoon at the newest of Sandals’ fifteen couples-only all-inclusive Caribbean resorts — the Sandals LaSource GrenadaThe island is not the easiest to get to, but the resort is well worth the effort, as you can see from their trip report 🙂

Hi Ann –

Words cannot describe how grateful we are for your advice in helping us choose the perfect honeymoon! Grenada was absolutely amazing!!! The resort was beautiful and the service was amazing from start to finish. Upon arrival we were treated like royalty and that feeling never left.

Honeymoon couple arm in arm on the beach at sunset in Grenada

They started by checking us in separately from everyone else on our shuttle, by bringing us to the Club Sandals room for a cocktail and to meet our butlers Hassan and Jaime. Hassan then brought us to our room to complete the check in process, which took maybe 10 minutes. They had champagne, a cheese plate, and fruit waiting for us. We took a look around the room and realized they had upgraded us to a rondaval suite- complete with our own patio, hot tub, and private pool!! The room was absolutely amazing and the perfect retreat for us.

I will say that Grenada is about as hot as it gets for us. The sun was scorching, so much so that even the natives were saying how unbelievably hot it was for the time of year. The beach was perfect for us, though some said it was small. We thought it was a great size, and never overcrowded. The butlers reserved loungers for us each day with a cooler of water on ice for us. We didn’t go to the pools, as we had our own in the room, and why travel so far to just sit by the pool. We returned to a clean room each day, with a fully restocked bar and fridge, and each day the butlers brought us some kind of afternoon snack. One day they drew us a bubble bath with roses all around, another they had breakfast set up for us on the patio.

We ate at every single restaurant. The food was simply amazing- the best of any all-inclusive we have ever been to. I would say the French, Hibachi, and Italian were our favorites, but you honestly couldn’t go wrong with any of it. The butlers made all of our reservations for us and gave us our schedule at the beginning of the week, met us at the room each night to escort us to our tables, and made sure our first drinks were at our seats before we went. Everything was as fresh as it gets, and this was the first trip that neither of us ended up with any stomach issues at all. The service was impeccable, and we couldn’t have asked for better.

The resort was fairly quiet, there were things to do each night from trivia to dance parties, to casino night and a chocolate banquet and beach party, but if you chose not to do those things our room seemed to be far away from everything and not noisy at all.

We only left the resort once to go on the sunset cruise- which also happened to be the only time it downpoured. They were great with transporting us, and the cruise was great- though Keith said if it hadn’t been free for us- we would have been disappointed. We spoke to other couples who did some of the other excursions, and one loved the jeep tour, the other thought that the half day shopping and tour excursion was kind of a waste, but loved the driving your own scuba tour.

Honestly, this was a trip that will be hard to top for us, between the service and the resort itself. It was unbelievable and more than what we could have imagined!!

So grateful to you and for you. We never would have taken this trip without you and the memories we made will be with us forever!

A special guest blogger’s feedback

I just got back from a very relaxing vacation at the El Dorado Casitas Royale (a resort that’s very popular with my honeymoon clients), and my husband was nice enough to write a “guest blog” post describing the experience from his point of view. Since he’s an all-inclusive “newbie”, and has not been to Mexico in many years, I figured his feedback would be more interesting to most people than mine.

“Your wife is a travel agent? Wow, you must get to go on some pretty cool trips.”

How right you are!

Even travel agents need to get away from it all, and this past week I was able to sneak away with Annie for a trip to El Dorado Casitas Royale, an adults- only resort just south of Cancun. I hadn’t been to Mexico in over 15 years, and had never spent any length of time at an all inclusive resort. Both were a pleasant revelation!

The flight to Cancun via Charlotte was easy as could be, and we were in Mexico in no time. Upon arrival at Cancun airport, one of the many perks of listening to my agent really came in handy. Annie had reserved a private transfer for us from the airport to the hotel. My Spanish is non-existent, and while the Cancun airport is modern and easy to navigate, having a driver to meet you and lead you where you needed to go took away whatever stress there might have been in getting out of the airport and to our resort.

The Casitas is part of the El Dorado Royale, an adults-only resort. While we love our kids and travel with them frequently, sometimes you want to get away from it all. The Casitas was a perfect location to get away and unwind. We were welcomed at the front desk of the El Dorado Royale with champagne, and later transferred via golf cart to the Casitas section of the hotel for our room assignment.

Our room may have been the most “basic” of the categories offered in the Casitas section, but it was one of the most comfortable and well laid out of any that we have visited. It had all the amenities, including a Jacuzzi, a screened in porch with a day bed, a mini bar, an outdoor shower, and a rain shower that made me want to renovate my bathroom at home!

As an “all inclusive newbie” I was concerned that I would be underwhelmed by the food, but I was told by my favorite travel agent that Karisma resorts prides itself on their restaurants, and nothing in my experience led me to think otherwise. We did tend to gravitate towards the restaurants and bars in the Casitas section of the resort. Kampai is done on a Pacific Rim theme which you would think would somewhat limit its menu, but during the course of our stay we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner here, and always found plenty to enjoy. D’Italia is, as the name would suggest, an Italian restaurant, and the meal here was probably my favorite of the trip. We were disappointed that due to a scheduling conflict of my making (more on that below) we were not able to eat at Fuentes ( a culinary theatre), but we met several people who thought it the best of the best. I may have started out high up on the all inclusive food ladder, but I wouldn’t hesitate to say that the food was quite good.

By far the best part of the Casitas experience for me was all of the spaces that you could visit to lay out and sun without feeling the least bit crowded. If you’ve ever been on a cruise ship during peak season and had to get up earlier than you do at home just to save a deck chair, you’ll appreciate the variety of options available throughout the day to find that perfect space to sit and read, sun worship, or enjoy a cocktail or two.  Whether it be the several pools with swim up bars or the daybeds on the beach, we never had trouble finding a prime spot to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather.

I did also learn one of the many things that make my wife’s job difficult. Not knowing better, I would have assumed that all Caribbean resorts on the water have great beaches. Not true! While the physical  plant and grounds of this resort are some of the nicest I’ve seen, I was surprised to see that it would not be the best choice for someone who loved water sports or the feeling of talcum powder sand between their toes. Not being much of a beach goer myself, this was of no consequence to me, and I was happy to spend my limited time at the beach sitting in a day bed reading a book. Annie explained that there are resorts nearby that do offer better beach experiences, and it’s one of the things she asks her clients about when deciding what resort(s) to recommend. Who knew?!

beach

Annie unfortunately not only married a lawyer (who probably asks more questions than he should) but a non sun worshipper who has been known to get antsy even in the most gorgeous of locations with the best of company if he sits still too long. Luckily, not only is my wife a talented travel agent, she’s an accommodating sort who knows I would rather be standing in the hot sun in a remote location fishing than laying at the pool at a gorgeous resort. (If you can’t tell by now, she’s also the smarter of us two!). Given this, she made arrangements for me to spend two days at Pesca Maya lodge near Ascension Bay. For those interested in light tackle fishing, I can’t recommend a trip there highly enough, and if you have an interest, please check out my TripAdvisor review here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g667233-d481691-r185523023-Pesca_Maya_Fishing_Lodge-Punta_Allen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

Having married the girl of my dreams many years ago, I was not terribly interested in the destination wedding facilities of the resort, but my wife has a passion for all things relating to her business, and we spent part of a day checking out the multiple venues available at the resort. I was surprised to see the variety of spaces available. From small chapels and courtyards to larger spaces and docks overlooking the water, there really did seem to be a location to fit every couple’s personality.

Lastly, a word about the Mexico I visited versus what I’ve heard and seen in the media. Yes, they speak a different language (although literally everyone I met was bilingual), and there are parts of the country that you would not want to visit. But I can say from experience the same things about many parts of this country. You can get mugged or worse in Orlando, no matter how Disneyfied it becomes, yet I wouldn’t give visiting there are a second thought. It is a source of much frustration to travel professionals that many travelers write Mexico off as a destination solely due to media reports of drug violence and the like. I saw or experienced nothing in our time there that would give me the slightest hesitation about visiting Cancun or the Mayan Riviera.

A first look at Couples Barbados

It’s always exciting when a new resort opens up, and the brand-new Couples Barbados has been a very highly-anticipated opening.  It represents the Couples brand’s first foray outside the island of Jamaica, and it’s the first couples-only all-inclusive on the island of  Barbados. The property opened in June, and my honeymoon clients Kathryn and Jay arrived just a few weeks later, so I asked them to please be sure to send me some feedback and photos — and they sure did!  Their fantastic (detailed) trip report is below:

Hi Ann,

Our trip was absolutely amazing!!  The flights down were easy and smooth.  Both flights were completely booked so they were crowded but otherwise fine.  The Hampton Inn in Boston was a great suggestion for the night before.  They were very perky at 4 am and the shuttle was on time.  There were three couples, including ourselves, on the plane from Miami that were going to Couples and the shuttle at the airport was ready for us when we got out of customs.  We arrived at Couples and were greeted with champagne and cold towels.  The check-in process was pretty simple.  (Note- the resort only takes MC and Visa, not a problem for us, but worth noting to future guests.)

The bellboy brought us and our luggage to our room, which was very comfortable.  We were in the main building on the property- our balcony looked out on the pool/swim-up bar, and the ocean.  The resort is really pretty.  I guess the original owners built it on Dover Woods and did a really nice job keeping the plant life so it felt like you were walking in a mini-jungle when you were going from building to building.  The added benefit of this is that each building seemed semi-secluded which gave the illusion of privacy.  Anyway, after we settled into our room, we went down to the main lobby and met the activities director who offered tours and an orientation to the property.  That was nice because it gave us the lay of the land and explained how the different restaurants worked and stuff like that.

The resort has 3 restaurants- the main restaurant is a buffet and did all three meals.  There was also an a-la-carte restaurant that you didn’t need reservations for, and then there was one restaurant that you needed to make a reservation for in advance.  We ate at all three and were very pleased with the food.  The buffet always had local fish and chicken, salad, fruit, rolls, etc and then there was also a variety of other food, depending on the time of day.  The second restaurant was very tasty but the third was by far the best food.  Reservations weren’t hard to get, and the food was amazing.  We also signed up for a private dinner on the beach on the last night and it was totally worth it.  In addition to the restaurants, there was also a pool-side grill that was open from about 11-5, and then again from 10 pm to 5am (who was up that late, I don’t know!!) which did grilled fish (amazing!), burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and fries.  It was definitely nice for days when we wanted something quick or when we came back from an excursion after lunch was finished.

The resort itself was up and running nicely by the time we got there.  You could tell that they were still working on improvements- but they did them when it would be least obtrusive to the guests.  i.e.- early morning painting, etc, The pools were great- we went in two of the three, and of course the ocean was perfect!  There were activities each day to do at the resort- yoga in the morning, pool volleyball in the afternoon, one day had a pool tournament, there was jewelry making on a few days, board game day, etc.  They gave us a schedule when we checked in so we could plan out what we wanted to do.  The pools weren’t over crowded, but I forgot how many Europeans smoke!!  Smoking was allowed outside so there was a fair amount of smoking around the pools but we did a pretty good job avoiding those people!

The staff at the resort were completely wonderful.  They were really attentive and helpful.  By the end of our stay, many of them knew our names (and we knew theirs).  The resort, and the island too, was spotless.  We always had clean towels at the pool, our room was cleaned and about mid-stay, they started doing turn-down service in the evenings as well.  The waitstaff and bar staff were also really great, and very, very friendly.

In general, we tried to plan an excursion/outing ever other day, and then spend the other days relaxing at the resort.  There was a desk at the resort where the staff would help us book activities.  The sunset catamaran sail and swim with sea turtles was part of the inclusive package.  Also, bus shuttles to Oistin’s fish fry were also included.  We chose to add on an Island Safari tour which was absolutely amazing.  It went all day, included lunch and showed us 10 of 11 parishes on the island.  It was recommended to us by the activities director and we could completely recommend it to other travelers to Barbados.  I think it cost about $90 USD per person.  We also signed up to take a shuttle into Bridgetown for a half day of shopping ($10 USD each) which was really nice because we could explore on our own and do souvenirs and stuff.  We also chose to do a half-ish day tour of Harrisons Cave (limestone cave network that goes 600 feet down into the earth- very cool, especially since I teach Geology!) and the National Wildlife Refuge (we got there for feeding time and this park/zoo doesn’t use cages, so you could see turtles, deer-like creatures, birds, and monkeys just come up and eat right in front of you.  Wicked cool, got lots of good pics!). That trip was about $75 USD each.  We also got a complimentary couples massage at the resort so we used that and enjoyed the spa as well.  So clearly there were plenty of things to do.  The only thing we didn’t have time for but would have liked was the tour to the Mount Gay Rum distillery but we chose the caves and wildlife instead.  The locals were happy to take US dollars or Barbados dollars and the exchange rate was $1USD = $2 BDS so it was really easy to pay either way.  I don’t think we met anyone who wouldn’t take US money but we collected some Barbados money as we went along.

Overall, we had an amazing time.  You could tell that the resort was just opening again and that the staff was new but for us, everything seemed to run pretty smoothly.  There were a few minor things that could be noted for the future.  First, we had trouble getting the mini-bar in our room stocked.  They were pretty inconsistent about it and we called down to the front desk a few times about it.  We didn’t really drink in our room much anyway because the bars were more fun and better stocked but it was a little annoying at times that we didn’t get stocked when we asked to be.  It’s pretty minor though.  Also, another minor thing, was that there wasn’t an ice machine in our building.  If we wanted ice for the room (for when our bar was actually stocked) we had to do across the property to get ice which was also kind of annoying.  Otherwise, I can’t really think of any major complaints about the resort.  We talked about wanting to go back in a few years once they have worked out all the kinks but we really can’t complain about our stay.  We met (and then avoided like the plague) a very crabby New Yorker who complained about everything- from his bacon being undercooked, to the selection of food on the buffet, to the water pressure in his shower.  He complained to anyone who would listen, and often complained to the staff, stating that Couples Negril was so much better, etc, etc.  We just aren’t those people.  We thought the resort was very luxurious and while you could tell that the staff was new, you could see them trying their best to make everyone’s stay the best it could be.

Our flights home, as you know, were delayed but we weren’t stressed because we knew we had the travel insurance, and your emails were waiting for us in Miami.  I can not thank you enough for taking the time to reserve seats on the flight for the next morning, just in case we didn’t make our connection.  We barely made it, by the way, and only because they were holding the plane and we sprinted to the flight.  I guess there were a lot of people on the flight from Barbados that were supposed to make the same connection but very few of us made it.  You alleviated the stress of what to do if we missed the flight though, and for that I thank you.

So I think that about covers it… and probably then some!!  We would be happy to elaborate on any aspects of the trip in more detail if you would like.  Thank you again from both of us for finding the Couples Barbados for us and for helping plan our honeymoon.  The trip exceeded our expectations and we wouldn’t change a thing about it.

Thanks again for everything, Kathryn

Barbados Bliss

Some clients come to me with a firm vision in mind, and others look to me to recommend the right destination/resort/experience for their “escape”.  Sara and Jason considered several different honeymoon ideas before taking my suggestion and booking the Turtle Beach resort in Barbados. Looks like it was a hit!

Hi Ann,

We had an amazing time on our honeymoon in Barbados. So here is the run down on our trip.  We were 20 minutes from landing in Barbados [and had mechanical issues], and they turned the plane around to San Juan.  I think the next time we go, we would definitely fly Jet Blue — better flight times, and Business Class was not that great on American because of their older fleet.

The hotel was amazing, it was recently redone, and we had a new suite. Our suite was tucked away from everything, and ocean front with king size bed.  All we could hear was the ocean from our balcony.  A lot of honeymoon perks, we must have had at least 3 bottles of champagne during the week, chocolate covered strawberries, different desserts in our room each day,  fresh flowers in a vase for the week, turn down service, flowers in the bathroom, and rose petals throughout the room.  We had booked a honeymoon package before we left, and we had a romantic dinner for two on the beach, with a menu we picked out, and we had a hotel concierge that was assigned to us for the week.

With the hotel, when we did check-in there was an issue with our reservation, for some reason it was in two segments and they were going to have us check out and check in to a new room since the second reservation was for two double beds.  We explained it was our honeymoon and the following morning when the manager was in, they took care of it, since it had been very late when we checked in.

The first morning we were there, there was a rep from Destination Management there at 9:30 to meet with us, we had no clue and were very tired from getting into our room at 2:00am.  We needed to give them our return shuttle voucher and wanted to book our tours.  We did not book anything with them, and would suggest people not.  You need to give a cash deposit to them, and can pay the rest the day of with whatever tour company they hook you up with.  We booked our activities through the hotel instead and they had a much better selection and better prices.

We did an all day catamaran snorkel trip with lunch, worth it.  The hotel put together a special adventure for us with a driver to the Harrison’s Cave, Animal Refuge, Botanical Flower Garden lunch at a local Bajan restaurant and a trip to Earth Works. So worth it!  We learned so much and covered most of the island in one day.  The hotel also arranged a driver for us to Mount Gay Rum, for the hour tour.  It was not worth doing the tour with lunch, so we went early, went back to the hotel for lunch and had time to still hang out on the beach.  Our hotel was great for getting us drivers, you set a set fare and they come back for you.  We also had a driver take us to Oistins for the Friday Fish Fry, such an amazing time and so worth it for a really fun night.  We did not do St. Lawrence Gap, about a 15 minute walk from our resort, as it’s not really our thing, it was mostly bars, and our hotel always had entertainment and dancing and the bars were open to 12:30 at the hotel.

Our hotel was really good about making sure you got the island feel for music, food, and culture. You need to make reservations for dinner, which is not an issue, you just do it at breakfast and they have the menus out for the different restaurants. Two restaurants are semi formal and one is formal. We checked out Crystal Cove, their sister property, and it was smaller and not as nice as ours. We also checked out Sandy Lane, which was really not that much nicer than ours. Turtle Beach and Sandy Lane have strong reputations on the island. It was nice to be traveling somewhere where there were no Americans, we met a lot of honeymooners at our resort.  If there were kids, they were in the kids club and you never saw them.  The food was amazing, the pool service was great, they would set up your lounge chair, always came through with drinks, fruit, and popsicles. Captain Sam is in charge of the beach, where you take  your towel card to get fresh towels, and they will set your lounge chair and cabana up for you. There were waves but you can swim, do water sports, and boogie board.  The staff is amazing, they take the time to get to know you, we got so many hugs when we left.

So thank you for putting together an amazing honeymoon, and we will be back at Turtle Beach with children — it was a great place!  You will be hearing from us again!

Thank you!

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
