Belizean Bliss

Honeymooners Samantha and Curtis just returned from a romantic/adventurous stay in Belize, at Francis Ford Coppola’s luxury beachfront lodge, the Turtle Inn.  They were  kind enough to share some really detailed feedback (and gorgeous photos), and it sounds like they had an amazing time.  Try not to be TOO jealous!  Better yet…give me a call and we can book your own “escape” to Belize 🙂

Hi Ann,

Belize was wonderful! We had such a great time!

Destination:

Belize was beautiful! Our resort was located in Placencia which was a very safe community with no crime being reported in the last 10 years! English is the official language of Belize so it was very easy to communicate with people. The other languages spoken are Spanish and some Creole. We visited during the dry season so it was very warm but that provided great weather all week long!

 Resort:

Turtle Inn was splendid! Very clean resort and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were directly on the beach which provided a great view day after day.  Prices for items in the gift shop and for meals/drinks were a bit pricey but since it is a 5 star resort we understood the pricing. American money was easily accepted and prices for food/drink were displayed in USD. Only two things that may be concerning to others traveling here.  First, you cannot throw toilet paper in the toilets as it clogs their septic so you needed to dispose of your toilet paper in a waste basket.  We had no issues with this but I can see this perhaps being an issue for other guests. Second was the sand fleas. During dawn and dusk is when they strike and after getting to the resort we should have gone right to the gift shop to buy bug spray but we did not. That night at the beach restaurant, we gotten eaten alive! I got the worst of it and my legs were covered in small red bites that look like bed bug bites and itched like crazy! This was the only part of the trip which I found to be troublesome as I was constantly itching and applying anti-itch cream.

Food/Drinks:

There were 3 restaurants located on the property but due to it being the slow season only 2 would open each night on a revolving schedule. All 3 restaurants were great but we seemed to eat at the main restaurant called “The Mare” the most which offered Italian and Seafood. There was Gauguin Grill located right on the beach and served seafood and then the last restaurant called Auntie Luba’s which served authentic Belizean style dishes. On Mondays and Thursdays at The Mare they held a traditional Dutch-Indian supper which we participated in and the food was all very good. All their seafood is caught fresh daily then prepared later that day. Curtis mostly ate seafood for all his meals and never had any complaints! I on the other hand could not get enough of their pizza! It was so delicious! There was a continental breakfast every morning which included fresh fruit, hard-boiled egg or yogurt with granola, fresh pastries, coffee, tea, and fresh squeezed juice.  As a bonus you could have breakfast delivered to your room! If you did not want the continental option they did have additional options on the menu for an additional cost. I personally loved ordering the beignets! There were 2 bars located at the resort as well which were open daily.  One was right on the beach! All our drinks were delicious — especially my favorite, the coconut mojito, in which they literally would chop down a coconut from a nearby tree and make your drink in the coconut! You could also go into town which was a 5 minute drive and had additional eating options.  We only went out one night to a restaurant called “Secret Garden” which was recommended by the resort and it was good and the prices were very reasonable. They also had a gelato cafe in town which was really delicious! Wish we would have known about it sooner as we would have gone there every night or at least I would have liked to!

Belize 9 honeymoon on the beach with drinks in Belize

As mentioned before the cost for food/drink was pricey and we tried not to think about it since it was our honeymoon but we met another couple at the resort who informed us that they had gone with the honeymoon package which included all meals. I looked this up on Turtle Inn’s website and I think it looks like a great deal. It was unfortunate that it was not brought to our attention when booking.  Having all meals included (2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts per meal) would have been a nice bonus.

 Tours:

We went on 4 tours/excursions while in Belize. The first was a manatee watch which I loved as manatees are my favorite animal! We saw plenty of manatees and our tour guide was very knowledgeable about them and knew where to find them! Our second tour was a trip to the Jaguar Preserve which was probably my favorite. It was very hot that day and we took a strenuous hike through the rainforest but the views from the top and getting to swim in waterfalls and see all types of birds and some lizards along with where a jaguar took a dust bath made it all worthwhile! After our hike, we got to go river tubing at the preserve which was very relaxing and we got to see a lot more birds! The third excursion was Cave Tubing/Zip Lining. Cave tubing was very cool but not for those who are claustrophobic. It was also very dark and quiet in the caves which made it eerie. Learning about the Mayan history with the caves was very interesting and we even got to see some left over Mayan pottery. Fruit bats lived in the caves and I personally love bats so I was excited to see so many! Water was shallow in the caves but at one point it does drop deep and another time when walking back it did go up to your chest. We then stopped at a local Belizean restaurant for lunch which was very good. Once finished we headed to zip lining in the jungle! That was fun as well but also a bit nerve wracking! I would not recommend if you are afraid of heights.  Finally, we ended our stay with a sunset cruise on the lagoon. There were plenty of snacks and drinks and our guide boated us around the lagoon and waterfront homes while we watched the sun set.  All our tour guides were great but our favorite has to be Melvin from Turtle Inn! Very knowledgeable and friendly! Always providing us with interesting facts/information, taking our photos, and answering all our questions! He always made sure we had enough to drink and eat when on the tours.  Another neat part about the tours is that we were always the only ones on them which made them very personal which was nice. We thought this was due to the slow season but the resort said they prefer to do them this way because it gives it the personal touch and experience.

 Other:

The only other comment we have is that we heard a lot about their sister resort, the Blancaneaux Lodge.  A lot of people staying at Turtle Inn raved about it as they split their trip by staying there a few days then going to Turtle Inn or vice versa. With everyone saying so many good things about it we kind of wished we had done so as well. We know at the time we were concerned about losing a day due to the traveling but from everyone we spoke to it seemed it would have been worth it.

If I think of anything else, I will be sure to let you know! Thanks so much for helping us book an amazing honeymoon!

A heavenly honeymoon in French Polynesia

Lots of honeymooners come to me with visions of overwater bungalows dancing in their heads.  Too often, they end up abandoning those dreams because of time limitations (it’s not really worth flying all the way across the world if you only have a week’s vacation) or budget constraints (those bungalows don’t come cheap!)

Nick and Kristi are among the fortunate few who were able to make the dream a reality. They had two key things in their favor…they live in California (a shorter “commute” than for us East Coasters) and they were travelling during “shoulder season”, in November, when room rates dip a little bit.  The end result, as you can see below, was a honeymoon to remember! Scroll all the way down for their detailed feedback about the islands that they visited.

Hi Ann-

We are just getting back into the swing of normal life after the wedding and amazing honeymoon.  Here are some notes about our trip! Overall it was incredible and we cannot thank you enough for all of your help.

Moorea was  gorgeous and we had a great time, but we were not necessarily blown away by the accommodations at the Hilton. Our room was nice, but the AC was a bit of an issue…the electricity in the garden villa was controlled by our room key, so when we left our room and didn’t come back for hours, the room got incredibly hot and took a very long time for the AC to kick in and cool off the space.  We ordered room service the first night and it was average, but other than that we ate out around the island, which was fun and had very good food. It was very nice that the restaurants offsite would come pick you up to dine with them…very nice touch.  It was a great first stop on our trip.  We rented a car and drove around the island which was  fun and also participated in Albert’s Snorkel adventure where we swam with sting rays, black fin sharks  and then ended with a traditional Polynesian BBQ feast. While this was a fun adventure, it was very touristy and there were so many people around the sting rays and sharks, it didn’t feel very natural and we felt as if the sharks and sting rays had been a bit domesticated….snorkeling around the Hilton was nice and it was great that the hotel provides the snorkel gear as well.  We met a lot of other honeymoon couples at the Hilton which was fun.

Bora Bora was absolutely gorgeous. There is nothing like getting off the airplane and seeing the gorgeous teal lagoon.  The Four Seasons was so incredibly luxurious…this was by far our favorite place and we honestly never wanted to leave.  The bungalow was amazing and the restaurants on the property were fantastic.  In fact we never left the resort.  We participated in a jet ski tour around the island through the Four Seasons and that was a blast.  We also went on a Pure Snorkel tour and that was incredible…a much more natural snorkeling experience…we had the opportunity to swim with manta rays, sting rays, sharks and saw the gorgeous coral gardens in Bora Bora. We had a very hard time leaving…

LeTahaa was great as well and definitely had a more authentic Polynesian luxury feel.   Our bungalow was very nice and we loved that the patio was on the side of the room, it was like having an outdoor private living room with a breathtaking view.  We spent a lot of time relaxing there.  We indulged in the French dining experience at LeTahaa which was very nice and a great way to end our trip.  The spa was authentic, nice and relaxing.  It does not have the american luxury feel but it does  makes up for it by being remote, intimate and has a unique Polynesian charm .  We did the snorkel tour offered through the hotel here as well and it was unforgettable, we got up close and personal with the sting rays and sharks, our tour guides were authentic and sang to us while on the boat as well as created a Polynesian picnic in the middle of the lagoon for us.  The offered fresh coconut, pineapple, mango, bananas and beer for us to enjoy after a morning of swimming.

Timing was perfect  and we had left just in time as rainy season was coming upon French Polynesia.

Our honeymoon was hands down one of the best and most memorable trips we have ever been on.  The only thing I think that we would have changed (if possible) was to do LeTahaa as the second stop and finished the trip in Bora Bora, other than that we had an incredible time and are so happy that we found you to help us plan our amazing adventure.

Hope this helps, thank you again for everything!

Kristi and Nick

Priceless Peace of Mind

Every honeymoon couples wants their “escape” to be magical, memorable, and stress-free, but with a life-threatening food allergy to contend with, the #1 item on Allison and Greg’s wish list was to be able to eat/drink at an all-inclusive resort without worrying about a medical crisis. We chose a Sandals resort in St Lucia, because of Sandals’ strong track record in accommodating special dietary needs, and they were able to relax and enjoy their honeymoon knowing that they were in good hands!

Hi Ann,

We had a fantastic time on our honeymoon.  I’ll break my email up into sections to make it easier!

Resort

The resort (Sandals Halcyon Beach) was perfect for us- quiet, romantic, and tropical.  It was exactly what we envisioned.

Dietary needs

Sandals was amazing with my dietary restrictions.  Within five minutes of arriving at the resort, the executive chef was waiting to meet me.  We discussed all of my concerns then and he went over the restaurant options and menus.  All of the waitstaff was extremely cautious as well.  The first question the servers asked was “are there any food allergies at the table” so even if I had not warned them, I would have been fine.  I ate great all week without being sick.

Sandals Honeymoon Registry

We did a lot of great excursions through the Sandals Honeymoon Registry, which I would definitely recommend.  They had prebooked everything for us, but were open to changing them if needed.  This took a lot of stress out of the registry process.  Unlike others, you didn’t have to estimate how much the excursions were, find a place to do them, get the money from the registry, pay for the excursion, and then book it yourself. Everything was taken care of.

Excursions

The excursions/extras we did were: Zip Lining, Soufriere Jeep Tour, Piton Sunset Cruise, Couples Massage, and the Private Candlelit dinner.  We absolutely loved every single one.

Zip Lining

We did it with Tree Top, who is #1 on TripAdvisor.  This was through the Honeymoon Registry.  They were great. Everyone was assigned a “guide” who assisted during the excursion.  Our guide took great photographs and videos for us.  The zip lining course was awesome.  There were 12 lines, each of different heights, lengths, and speeds. I was totally petrified before doing it, but I got over it and had so much fun.  The views of the rain forest were gorgeous as well.

Soufriere Jeep Tour

This was from our registry as well and was our favorite.  We were picked up at the resort in a big open air jeep and were able to stand in the back. We viewed the Pitons, went to the Sulphur Springs, went to a waterfall, ate lunch at a local restaurant, and stopped in a lot of towns/villages.  We really felt like we got to see so much of St. Lucia.  The views were breathtaking and we had so much fun at each stop.

couple on their honeymoon in st. lucia

Piton Sunset

This was on our registry, but not purchased, so we used the Tour credit we got when we booked the honeymoon.  Also a very fun excursion.  We took the large catamaran out to the Pitons, snorkeled between the Pitons, and then sailed back.  The sail to the Pitons was relaxing and scenic, while the ride home became a party with a DJ and rum punch!

Couples Massage

One of the best massages I have had!  The massages are all done in gazebos outside throughout the resort.  It was very romantic, with candles that we got to pick the scent of, and take home for a souvenir.

Private Candlelit Dinner

A can’t miss!  The food was exquisite and the service was excellent.  You can choose to have the dinner on the beach or in a gazebo. We chose a gazebo because of the rain.  We had a private server.  It was a four course meal, with a bottle of champagne (and other drinks if you wanted) and a rose.  Very romantic!! We just loved it!

Weather

I know I voiced our concerns about the weather before we left.  It was definitely rainy! Not so much like Florida.  It rained almost every day we were there.  A few days it rained all day long.  Friday was a complete wash out, the towns were flooded, the shuttles were canceled between resorts, and the beaches were a mess with debris.  Even the locals were amazed with how much it was raining.  For this reason, I would probably not suggest St. Lucia during this time of the year, although of course overall we would highly recommend St. Lucia.  We made the most of our trip and didn’t let the rain affect us at all, but a lot of guests were complaining!

Airline

We had a good experience flying into St. Lucia, but the trip home was horrible.  The shuttle got us to the airport very early, so we waited forever!! Then when we landed in Miami, they didn’t have a gate for us so we sat on the tarmac for over an hour.  We had to rush through customs and security.  We made out connecting flight with honestly not a moment to spare.  We boarded, but then were delayed because of a missing lifejacket.  By the time we were at our house, it had been 14 hours of traveling!  We seem to always have problems with American Airlines like this and probably won’t fly with them again.

I hope this all helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Thank you again for helping us plan our dream honeymoon!!!!

From Napa to the Napali Coast

From here on the East Coast, the flights to Hawaii can be daunting, and clients often ask about breaking up the trip with a stop in California along the way. Honeymooners Kaitlyn and Joe did just that, with a few days of winetasting in Napa as an “aperitif” before the main event —  their adventurous honeymoon on the Big Island and Kauai.

Hi Ann,

Sorry I am just getting back to you, but we have been busy getting settled back in.

We had an awesome time on the honeymoon!  Thank you so much for all of your help planning it.  Everything went as planned and we didn’t have any issues.  Our favorite hotel room was definitely the Andaz Napa.  We got upgraded to an Andaz Large Loft room.  While in Napa, we did winery tours of Robert Mondavi, Castello di Amaroso, and Cakebread Cellars.  Castello di Amaroso is a little touristy, but was definitely worth seeing.  We want to go back to Napa at some point so we can spend a few more days checking out the other wineries.  Downtown Napa where the hotel was located, was also very cool.  We would enjoy exploring that area a little more as well.

beautiful Hawaiian beach for a perfect honeymoon

The Big Island was our favorite part of the honeymoon.  The Waikoloa Marriott was nice, but the rooms could use some renovation.  When we checked in, I asked about getting a room upgrade because we were on our honeymoon, but they said they were all sold out.  When they brought us to the Garden View room, it was on the first floor and the balcony walked out to a main pathway.  I went back to the check-in desk and asked if they had anything off the ground level.  They were able to put us in a corner room on the second floor.  It was much better than the original room we had a view of the pool and partial ocean.  The highlight on the Big Island was the doors-off helicopter tour we took out of Hilo to see the volcano and waterfalls.  We booked it through http://hawaiivolcanoeshelicoptertours.com/  We also drove around a lot and got to see all of the different parts of the Big Island.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Kauai Marriott was the nicest resort out of any of the hotels we stayed at.  I would love to stay here again.  The grounds were beautiful and pristine.  We were upgraded to a partial ocean view room on the top floor upon check-in.  While on Kauai, we did a boat tour of the Napali coast through http://napaliexperience.com/, saw the Waimea Canyon, hiked on the Kalalau trail, and did some shopping.  We didn’t have the best weather while we were there, which is probably why we liked the Big Island better.  Everyone we talked to said it was the worst weather they had seen on Kauai in the last 10 years, but we still had a great time.

Overall, it was the trip of a lifetime and was everything we thought it would be.  Thank you again for all of your help putting it together!

Joe and Kaitlyn

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
