A love affair with Belize…

You really can’t ask for a better, more detailed, more personal trip review than this. Maggie and Matt clearly LOVED their honeymoon in Belize 🙂

Our honeymoon was, in one word: amazing. We miss being in Belize every single day and we can’t wait to go back! I apologize for taking so very long to get this to you–to be honest, every time I start to write it, I get sad because we aren’t in Belize…

When we arrived in Belize on the 6th, a driver from Chaa Creek was outside the airport, waiting to pick us up. We discovered while on the plane, though, that the couple sitting behind us was also going to Chaa Creek! That was really nice, as we hit it off with them nicely, so sharing the van with them for the two hour drive to Chaa Creek was a fun experience. Our first stop, after not even three minutes driving, was at a local market so the guys could get some beers for the drive (apparently it’s totally OK for passengers to drink while the car is in motion! Very cool.) They brought back the local Belizean beer called “Belikin”, which we happily drank on our way to Chaa Creek. Just driving through the country was interesting… such beautiful terrain the whole way through.

Upon arriving at Chaa Creek, we were greeted by the super friendly staff at the reception desk, with cool peppermint neck towels and sorel juice laid out for us. Sorel juice is made from a local pink flower that looks just like the hibiscus flower and it is delicious and refreshing! The peppermint towels were a wonderful relief from the humidity (although we were honestly never uncomfortable due to the weather–it was the perfect time to visit, rain showers from time to time, but still gorgeous, even then). We were led to our *BEAUTIFUL* room–complete with a thatched roof, beautiful stone floors, tall ceilings, beautiful decor and honeymoon flowers and towel decorations everywhere! We had TWO showers, one that was a completely private outdoor shower, and one indoor shower that was big enough to host a party in. It was heavenly. The bed was luxurious and all the decor was beautiful and handmade. I hate to describe it right now because it’s making me really want to go back! Our room also came with two hammocks that we would hang up on the front deck outside our room to read in whenever we had down time. It was perfection. Our first dinner was a delicious lobster tail (mine) and a perfectly cooked steak (Matt’s)–both with Belizean flavor and fresh, local side dishes. The food was perfection, each and every day. We were about ready to move in. After relaxing all afternoon and evening, we scheduled a couples massage at the spa (overlooking the jungle!) for the following morning, which was absolutely glorious, relaxing and heavenly all at once.

Maggie 2Maggie 3

After lunch, we took off for our first excursion, which was ziplining through the jungle at a place called Calico Jack’s. Our driver and tour guide was named Hugh, and he was so, so informative and friendly that the drive there ended up being just as wonderful as any other part of the trip! We loved Hugh! Ziplining through the rainforest was unbelievable… at first I was terrified (Matt went first and loved it) but after my first line, I was in love. It’s exhilarating, exciting and absolutely beautiful. The two guides who took us ziplining were very informative & friendly, and as we walked through the jungle from line to line, they would stop and show us such interesting things in the rainforest, ways to survive or interesting creatures (the ‘give and take’ tree was so cool!–if you touch the sharp needles on the bark, it poisons you, but cut the tree open and you’ll find the antidote in its sap!)

The next morning, Hugh’s brother, Daren, took us on a tour of Xunantunich, a Mayan site about an hour away from Chaa Creek. It was a fascinating and very humbling experience. The history of the Mayans is so, so rich in Belize. Daren was more than willing to take pictures of us there–and the pictures he took turned out wonderfully! He eventually told us that photography is a big hobby of his and that he’d won a competition to have a photograph he took of a local bird be on the cover of Belize’s telephone book (we later got to SEE the photo/telephone book in real life at the next place we stayed! It was really awesome). That afternoon, Daren drove us to the second half of our day, which was canoeing through a dark and beautiful cave. There were bats flying waaay above us in the cave, which added to the spooky and ethereal feeling. Towards the end, when we were closer to the exit of the cave, Daren had us switch off our headlamps so we could experience what total blindness felt like–such a bizarre feeling… and then he guided us out of the rest of the cave in TOTAL darkness. It was such an amazing experience that we’ll never forget.

The following day, we went to another Mayan village, called Cahal Pech, and Hugh was our tour guide again (to our excitement!). This one was just as fascinating as the previous day’s excursion to Xunantunich. We had originally planned to go to the huge, Indiana Jones-style cave excursion called ATM, but the rain in the afternoon had caused the risk of flash flooding, which isn’t worth the risk, for sure! The staff definitely felt bad that we had to change our plans, and they went above and beyond to make sure our day was still fun and well-planned. After we went to Cahal Pech, Hugh drove us into the Mennonite area of Belize, which was really interesting. It basically looked like Pennsylvania had been plopped down in the middle of the rainforest! We stopped at an ice cream shoppe that served homemade Mennonite ice cream and it was delicious (we’d recommend the coconut ice cream!). Hugh was so informative and excited to show us Belize that the feeling was infectious… we had such a great time with all of our guides, Hugh, Daren & Selwyn in particular.

On our last day at Chaa Creek, we went for a horseback ride in the rainforest and finally heard some howler monkeys! It was unreal! They sound terrifying but they’re tiny monkeys who are only interested in making a big racket to scare away other howler monkey families (very territorial). We’d heard from so many other travelers that the howler monkeys would wake us up every morning before the sun was even up, but it never happened (apparently because it wasn’t mango season–so avoiding being woken up that early was just another reason why we’re happy we went in October!). Our guide, Selwyn, worked really hard to get us as close to the monkeys as possible so we could take videos and lots of pictures. We ended our horseback ride with views overlooking miles and miles of rainforest–it was breathtaking–and the perfect ending to our time at Chaa Creek (even though we would’ve preferred it to never end).

Maggie 7Maggie 9

This is such a short summary of all the amazing things we did in Chaa Creek–the waterfall infinity pool on site was beautiful and so much fun (I mostly summarized all the adventures we had, but we had lots of relaxing downtime by the pool and reading in our hammocks–glorious!), the food was delicious (the morning fryjacks are our favorite–we’re still missing those!–we even saved the dinner menus they slipped under our doors each night so we can remember how good the food was!), the property and our room was utter perfection and the staff was wonderful–so friendly, happy, kind & personable. Hugh even came by the local airport we were flying out of to get to the next leg of our trip after we’d left Chaa Creek (on his day OFF!) to give us a DVD he had told us about from which he learned so much about the Mayan ruins he guided us through. We were so blown away by that. Shenny, Hugh, Daren, Saul, Rose were some of the most amazing people we met through Chaa Creek! All the dining staff, too, were truly a pleasure to be around. All of the locals we met outside of Chaa Creek were wonderful as well–happy, friendly and so welcoming. We unfortunately can’t remember everyone’s names from Chaa Creek, but everyone was equally friendly and always happy to help us everywhere we went. We truly felt we made friends there. We can’t WAIT to go back!!

The small ten passenger plane that took us from the mainland of Belize to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye was really fun and provided beautiful views the entire ride. We arrived at the local airport on San Pedro and were quickly picked up in a roomy golfcart by a Ramon’s Village employee who was extremely friendly and enthusiastic. After relaxing in our room for a while and exploring the beach/walking along the beach, we decided to grab dinner at Caroline’s Cookin’, a local restaurant that was about a 3 minute walk from our room. I’d read reviews on Yelp that all informed me that Caroline’s was the place to go. Boy were they right! It was absolutely delicious. We had made reservations earlier in the day (which we came to find out were totally unnecessary as it was the slow season) and when we came back for dinner, Caroline cooked our meal herself and chatted us up throughout dinner. Matt ordered the jerk conch (conch was in season so we had a LOT of it and it was all delicious!) and I ordered the curried shrimp… we both had a few rum punches (one of which Caroline gave us for free) and it was all heavenly. We were the only customers (reflection of the season not the service & food!) so we got lots of attention.

Maggie 13

Almost every day that we were in San Pedro, we relaxed in thatch-covered hammocks on the beach, reading our books and refilling our drinks whenever a staff member came by. It was the most heavenly paradise. That was our absolute favorite part about staying on the beach–just relaxing together in our hammocks! Even when it rained one day, we stayed where we were, because we were completely sheltered and it was still warm. It was wonderful. Although we’d thought about going out on a snorkeling trip, we were having such a wonderful time relaxing together on the beach each day that we never wanted to move a muscle! (Plus, snorkeling trips there can get expensive and we weren’t interested in spending extra money–something to do next time!)

Maggie 16

The only day we really explored away from Ramon’s was our last day–we wanted to get some souvenirs for our family, so we walked around some of the touristy shops and bought gifts that were cheaper than the gifts offered in Ramon’s gift shop. We also found a fantastic chocolate shop that made really delicious treats–we had chocolate confections for dessert one night and also bought a few bars to bring back as gifts. Another excellent restaurant we went to was Elvi’s Kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the floors were made of sand! It was a really fun experience. Elvi’s Kitchen was a lot farther of a walk from Ramon’s Village than we’d realized, so by the time we left dinner it was very dark and I was really grateful to have my tall, muscled and imposing husband by my side. San Pedro is most definitely more developed in all areas than Chaa Creek and the surrounding town of San Ignacio, and it was never clearer than when we were out at night. We were just about the only people not traveling by golf cart (we were on foot) so I’m sure if we’d been in a golf cart I’d have felt safer, but we couldn’t justify renting it for just one dinner–it’s really not necessary during the day at all (unless you want to explore the undeveloped regions of the Caye).

Maggie 12

On our second to last night there, we decided to order a pizza to be delivered to our room! We missed pizza (even though the Belizean food was delicious) and it made for a fun night in together. On our last night, we had dinner at the restaurant at Ramon’s Village. Although it wasn’t the best meal we had, it was still really good. The breakfasts we had at Ramon’s Village were all delicious, too, and they all came with fryjacks! Being out on the hammocks on the beach during lunch was awesome–we ordered right from a waiter and ate while sitting in our hammocks! Since we’ve gotten back home, our first purchase as a married couple was a two-person hammock! We miss those relaxing days!!

We never wanted our honeymoon to end, it was so amazing. You’ve made us life-long Belize travelers… we can’t wait to get back as soon as we can! THANK YOU SO MUCH, Ann!!!

A winning itinerary

Honeymoon planning is a fascinating and intricate process, and I never really know where we’re going to end up…but I can always count on it being something memorable and unique.  Nothing illustrates that better than recent honeymooners Michael and Alicia, who first came to me with just a rough wish list that included “adventure”, “culture’, “history”, “wildlife”, and “interesting terrain”.

They wanted to explore somewhere totally foreign, and cross some items off their bucket list at the same time.  We talked about Ecuador (the Galapagos) and Peru (Machu Picchu, the Amazon), and then extended into neighboring countries like Chile and Argentina, and then inspiration struck. They found out that there was a marathon happening in Buenos Aires around their October dates, and we decided to build the whole honeymoon around the marathon! We put together a fantastic two-week itinerary that started in Buenos Aires and wound its way down the coast, across to wine country, and then up to the border near Brazil and Paraguay to see Iguazu Falls. The trip was totally customized to their interests and passions, and it’s an experience that they’ll remember forever.

Check out their trip report, and their smiles as they reached the finish line!

Ann,

Here is a photo of us at the finish line!

MIchael and Alicia marathon

In Buenos Aires we were focused on the Marathon, and we focused our free time in Recoleta near our hotel. We did go to Tango Porteno which was a tango performance with included dinner. In hindsight, we should have taken a city bus tour on the double-decker bus on our first day. Then we should have visited the colorful part of town La Boca on Saturday. There is extensive street art and I had looked up a tour but we did not have free time to formally see this.

Puerto Madryn was excellent. The day excursion to Peninsula Valdes was fantastic in itself.  Our guide, Leandro, also took us to Punta Tumbo the following day to view a colony of Magellanic Penguins.  On the way back we also stopped at MEF in Trelew to see the recently discovered dinosaur bones (largest in the world). The guide helped to make this a memorable experience. The view of the water from our corner room was terrific.  The accommodations were spacious. It was difficult to capture any quality photos from the boat (optional tour that we added on) of the Southern Right Whales but this was a worthwhile experience.

Mendoza (also excellent – we would love to return and spend more time). The winery tour was fun but we should have booked an afternoon time instead of drinking wine at 9 am.We did add an excursion to see a futbol match (soccer) and this was a memorable experience! We also added  half day excursion to ride horses with included asado dinner on a ranch.

Iguazu Falls (worthwhile but one time is enough.) We enjoyed seeing the falls and the park.  We also added on a boat ride in the water that provided additional views of the falls. We would have liked to go to a reserve and see some of the local wildlife that we were not able to view when in the park.

Overall, I would recommend taking a language class prior to or upon arriving to Argentina to have a more immersive experience. We used the Xoom.com service to wire money directly from our US bank account and convert at a favorable exchange rate (cash pick-ups only in major cities). The private transfers were on time and very convenient!  The accompanying guides were helpful inside the airports.

We had similar breakfast offerings at all of the various hotels.  They included eggs, coffee and fresh fruit which suited our tastes. We did take a voltage converter and this came in handy, as only one hotel had a 110V outlet. Self-laundry was not an option (which is common in the USA) but we found laundry services near the hotels in Buenos Aires and Puerto Madryn.  Computers and WiFi were hit or miss at the more remote locations:  Puerto Madryn and Iguazu Falls. The services at the provided hotels were good to excellent.  We had positive experiences with room service and restaurant staff. The rooms were clean and in safe locations with nearby attractions.  In Mendoza, there was a separate tour desk inside the connected Casino but we found the information/ reservations to be unreliable.

We ran into two holidays while we were there:  Mother’s Day and Columbus Day which affected certain places being open or available. It took some getting used to the siesta hours and late dinner service times at restaurants!

A family getaway on the Disney Wonder

Amy, Kevin and Elle just returned from their first Disney cruise and were nice enough to send me a really detailed trip report. If you’ve every wondered whether this is an experience that your family would enjoy….read on!

We are back–and I am at my desk at school–waking up to 40 degree temps after a week in the Caribbean is tough.  We had an amazing time–if you are considering a Disney Cruise, go. It is worth it!!

We were met at the airport by a driver–so nice to do it this way–we could be on our own time schedule–they had their own loading zone so we could take our time getting her car seat in (which they provided) and our luggage settled.  We drove from Orlando to Port Canaveral (about an hour) to the Radisson.  Awesome hotel–great pool with waterfalls–which was great after traveling all day.  We arranged a shuttle from the hotel to the port ($6 a person–and they do long term parking there if you are driving in).

a couple holds a small child in front of huge disney cruise ship

The next morning we took the city bus a few miles down to a Starbucks and a few last minute things at Walgreens. Then we rode to the port and got on the boat (Disney Wonder).  They have a really nice terminal and everything was so easy.  The only line we waited in was to register Elle for the Youth Programs and when we got to the front their computers went down–so they put the band on her and we registered her on the boat that night (took less than 5 minutes). We headed to the buffet for lunch–great food and service there–they had special kid trays so you didn’t have to worry about them dropping a plate.  Plus they had people carrying your stuff to a table for you–with a smile!  We then dropped our bags at our stateroom and decorated our door.  Our room was great–we had a king size bed (it felt like) and then there was a couch that they folded out and prepared every night for Elle. We had an inside stateroom — to me it wasn’t worth paying more for a balcony as we were only in our rooms to sleep–I know Kevin’s parents paid over $1000 more for their balcony and their room was about the same size as ours.    We got dressed for dinner.  Our first night was at The Parrot Cay–a Caribbean-themed restaurant–and met our 2 cool waiters who had things all set up for Elle.  Really good food and it is nice because they bring the kids’ food when you get your appetizer so as soon as they are done eating–we brought Elle up to the kids club while we enjoyed our dinner. She loved going to the kids club.  We went to the Golden Mickeys show–the shows were great because they were only 45 minutes–perfect length for kids. Before the show we met Ariel!

Next morning we woke up in Nassau–we ate breakfast outside overlooking the port–very cool.  We actually didn’t get off the boat at all here.  We stayed on and swam and Elle went to the kids club for a little bit. She also got to meet Anna and Elsa (it was a ticketed meet and greet and I got tickets as soon as we got on board it wasn’t advertised until you got on the boat–which really worked for us since we had no excursions planned). Then she had an accident–swimming in the pool she slipped and split open her chin requiring stitches–very traumatic for me–she of course bounced right back after many tears–we had to meet with the head of security but everyone was so great and kept checking on us to make sure we were ok (luckily we had travel insurance so I filed a medical claim with them this morning!)  We had dinner at Triton’s that night (Ariel-themed)–our waiters had everything Elle liked ready to go–which was prefect.  It was also Halloween night–lots of people dressed up–we didn’t know about it ahead of time–but Elle had her Elsa dress and I wore a blue dress and put my hair in a bun with a crystal headband (and called myself Cinderella).  We kept Elle with us through dinner because she had gotten hurt-glad we did they had special Halloween desserts–a chocolate spider! We went to Toy Story the musical that night–great cute show.

The next morning we woke up at Castaway Cay–amazing.  We loved their beach–everything was clean and calm–there was a cool slide you could go down–you had to be 38 inches tall–Elle just made it–we spent 2 days just hanging out at the beach–we rented a tube to float around in both days and Kevin rented a bike and rode around the island for awhile.  They had wagons and strollers you could borrow to get around which was nice–we saw lots of people bring theirs but we didn’t–Elle hasn’t ridden in awhile so we borrowed a wagon.  This was the most relaxing part of our vacation–we stayed on the beach til it was time to get back on the boat.  The 3rd night was Pirate Party night–again people dressed up!  They gave everyone bandanas in their staterooms so we wore those–we met Donald Duck, Jack Sparrow, Mickey Mouse and did a family picture.  The restaurant had a Pirate parade and everyone paraded and did the limbo–they had special light up cups for the kids. We skipped the show–it was a comedian and we were tired–we did go up to the pirate party–we grabbed a spot next to a dancing block so we got to dance with chip and dale and Minnie mouse–it was kind of long so we didn’t make it until the fireworks. The final night we had dinner at Animators Palette which was so cool–Mickey Mouse came through–and seeing all the art work light up and change colors was very exciting Elle loved it! We met Minnie Mouse on the final night–for some of the best pictures she was finally smiling.

a young child gives Minnie Mouse character a kiss on a Disney Cruise

It was so worth it–the experience was very much designed for them.  They made everything easy and everyone was so willing to help and get you what you needed.  If I knew we were going to have a fall break again I would have signed up again!

California Dreamin’

Not sure if you got the memo, but California was BIG this year! I had easily half a dozen clients ask for California coast road trips this summer, and I was more than happy to oblige:) There’s so much to see and do in that stretch of coast from San Francisco to L.A. that it can be tailored to anyone’s specific tastes and interests. Here’s a trip report from Kevin and Sue, whose trip happened to coincide with the August earthquake in Napa:

Hi Ann.  We had a terrific time on our California vacation!

We did experience the earthquake, but it luckily ended up being—exactly as you put it—just a good travel story.  The “funny” part of it was my wife Sue’s initial reaction.  We were in bed, as the quake happened just before 3:30 in the morning. Sue’s first words as the bed started shaking moderately were, “Kevin, what are you doing?”—said in a slightly annoyed tone!  I sat up and said, in a surprisingly calm voice, “I’m not doing anything, and I’m pretty sure this is an earthquake.”  The shaking lasted for what seemed like about 15-20 seconds.  I do feel bad for the folks up in Napa who experienced the brunt of it, but as far as we could tell, San Francisco itself suffered no damage at all.

The Jet Blue flights were good both ways.  I think they are my favorite domestic airline at this point.  We also enjoyed excellent weather during the trip.  It seemed like every day was a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures during the day in the low 70s, cooling to about 59/60 at night, and no rain.

Kevin Grady 2

The Prescott Hotel in San Francisco was fine for our purposes—good central location, clean accommodations, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed, plus continental breakfast and a daily cocktail hour included.  (We only took advantage of the cocktail hour one day because we were out and about so much).  It is an older building and some of the furnishings are a little dated, but we were content there. I would rate it overall as about a 3.8 or 3.9 out of 5 stars.  Sue and I both loved the city of San Francisco.  It felt a lot like Boston to us, except for all the steep hills there!  One thing we learned is that the famed cable cars are not at all useful on summer weekends.  Lines to get on a cable car during the weekend ranged from about 30 minutes to 2 hours!

Kevin Grady 1

We enjoyed Fisherman’s Wharf; Alcatraz was great; we took an enjoyable Segway tour; walked down Lombard Street (it was not as pretty as it apparently is in the Spring, but it was still cool), went across the Golden Gate Bridge a couple of times, had lunch one day in Sausalito; and walked through Muir Woods.  We absolutely would go back!  Here are a few restaurants we liked—Scoma’s (seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf), Jeanne D’arc (good reasonably priced prix fixe French food including a soufflé—but it’s a small and very quirky setting–located in  the basement of a hotel and decorated like a cross between a castle and a church); and Ristorante Milano (very small neighborhood Italian restaurant, with excellent homemade pastas including lasagna and gnocchi).

We very much enjoyed the drive south to Monterey!  The Jeep worked out fine.  We loved our accommodations at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.  The room and bed were very comfortable; we had a great view of the ocean right below (including sea otters frolicking); and the staff were all friendly and helpful!  The spa there was excellent—we took advantage of the two rooftop hot tubs each day and each of us had a massage on the last day!  The restaurant in the hotel had good food and a first class ocean view.  I would rate the hotel overall about a 4.3 or 4.4 out of 5.

Kevin Grady 3

We enjoyed the Monterey Aquarium; we went horseback riding on the beach; we walked around Carmel and had a drink at Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch (he apparently shows up a lot and plays the piano there, but we did not see him that day); we loved the 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach and then the drive down to Big Sur (had lunch on the way at a restaurant called Rocky Point—good food (not exceptional but good) and just an outstanding/fantastic view, where we saw a number of whales from our table!)

Kevin Grady 4

Bottom line—our trip was an unqualified success!  We are very glad we went; we would do it again; and we would recommend it to anyone!

Thanks again for your help putting it together, Ann!!

Maybe it’s time to think about planning the NEXT vacation!!!

 Best,

Kevin

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
