Majestic Elegance, Punta Cana

Some great clients just returned from a romantic “escape” to the Majestic Elegance resort in Punta Cana and were kind enough to share their candid feedback, photos, and some tips/advice for other couples considering a similar vacation.

Hi Ann!

We had such a great time.  Even though we came home to a bunch of snow, we really enjoyed every minute of our vacation.

The advance planning was great, and we have nothing but positive things to say.  We were provided all the information we needed to make our trip a success! It was very helpful that you told us about the $10 per person fee that they charge when you get there.  It helped us to be more prepared so we knew what to expect.

Our flights were great. Since we only took carry-ons, I thought it may be valuable to know that… I took a curling iron with me in my carry-on.  When we checked in to leave at the Punta Cana airport, the Dominican Republic security does not allow you to carry on hairdryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc.  So I had the option of checking my bag for $29 or relinquishing my curling iron.  I gave them the curling iron since it cost less than $29.  But, it was kind of disappointing that I had to throw it away.  This was surprising, and I thought it would be helpful information that you could pass along to other clients of yours.

We took a cab upon arrival as we didn’t see the shuttle right away and found it difficult to locate the correct person.  We took a taxi to the resort for US $45.   We also did that because we didn’t want to get put in a shuttle that was going to multiple resorts and it would take even longer to get to our resort.  Which turned out to be true –when we met another couple who was also with FunJet and said it took them an hour and half to get to the resort, when our cab ride was only 30 minutes.

Going home, our concierge told us that the FunJet representative would be there between 3 and 5pm and when I arrived around 3:45, they still had not arrived to help me arrange to shuttle to the airport.  I called the phone number you put on the itinerary for the FunJet service line (thank you so much for providing that!) and was able to confirm our shuttle to go home.  The shuttle was there early and we had no trouble getting to the airport at a time convenient for us.

The Majestic Elegance was wonderful.  It was very clean and well kept, from the rooms to the lobby and all restaurants, bathrooms, etc.  The staff was very nice, friendly and accommodating.  We were very happy with the resort staff who did the games, and events each day (called the “animation team”) The shows each night and the activities during the day were great.  We were very happy with the resort overall and would recommend it to other people.

There was some confusion about the Elegance Club Junior Suite, in the adults-only section of the resort.  At first, we were brought to the wrong room, a room with two small double beds (they looked almost like twin beds).  I told them we were in the wrong room and they said they would push the beds together and make it just like a king.  But then they took us to a different room with a king bed.  The room did not have all the things listed on the website.  We didn’t have robes in our room and had to ask 3 times before they were delivered to us.  There was no “selection of pillows” or aromatherapy stuff or slippers as they stated.  However, the room was always cleaned when we requested and the bed was turned down every night for us.

The food was very good.  The buffet style restaurant was typical, but the steakhouse, Italian, Japanese and French restaurants were excellent.  The food was delicious and we were very happy with those restaurants.  The breakfast buffet was very good and there was basically only one restaurant with a buffet option for lunch if you were in your bathingsuit/cover-ups.

We decided not to do any excursions.  We went parasailing and used the company that had a hut on the beach right at our resort.  We were very happy with that experience and it worked out just as they told us.

Here are some tips/advice for other clients considering a similar “escape”:

I have stayed at other all-inclusive resorts and it seemed that tipping the staff was a lot more visible and accepted at this resort than others I have stayed at.  I would also recommend that you get more familiar with Spanish phrases/words for the trip.  The staff spoke some English, but many spoke little to no English.  Taxi drivers also spoke little to no English, so if you were familiar with the language, your trip would be smoother – and it’s fun to try and speak a new language.  They also appreciate that you are trying to speak their language, even if it’s not that good.

Thanks again, Ann!

A Very Disney Christmas

One of Annie’s favorite clients spent the holidays at Walt Disney World with her extended family, and returned with this fantastic trip report.  Now’s the time to plan ahead for a “Disney Christmas” of your own!

Dear Ann,

On behalf of my entire extended family, thank you for your assistance in planning our Christmas vacation in Walt Disney World.  It was a vacation we won’t ever forget.  As you know, we have been to WDW plenty of times but never at Christmas, and they didn’t disappoint.

The Wilderness Lodge, our favorite resort, was stunning – especially the lobby.   The enormous Christmas tree, coupled with the roaring fireplace and western décor, was perfect for a warm holiday getaway.   On Christmas Eve, we met Santa – the most authentic-looking Santa I’ve ever seen – and had our photos taken with him.  Best of all, he smelled like cookies!  Yes, the Disney experts even managed to make their Santa better than any old mall Santa.   And, the hotel passed out free cookies on Christmas Eve to enhance the experience.

Because we had been to Disney, our priority for this trip was to experience the Christmas treats in the parks and hotels.  On the first day, we visited the enormous gingerbread house in the Grand Floridian.  It doubled as a bake shop, and we nibbled on shingles (chocolate-coated gingerbread slabs used as “shingles” on the house’s roof).  The gingerbread carousel with horses carved from chocolate in the lobby of the Beach Club cannot be described.  It had to be seen…and it smelled delicious!  The lobby of Yacht Club Resort had a miniature New England-style train racing through a sugary rock mountain surrounded by a candy-coated model village.  The Candlelight Processional package was well worth the money and very special.  It’s a must-do for anyone visiting during Christmas.

Not only can you meet Santa Claus in America, but you can hear storytellers detail the adventures of Père Noël in France, La Befana in Italy and other legends from around the world. Kwanzaa and Hanukkah observances are also featured.  Each storyteller remains behind for photo ops with guests, and my son loved to do this.  The Christmas parades,  Christmas fireworks, and Illuminations were all magically different than what we have seen in previous trips.

Our favorite attraction was the Osborne Family Lights in Disney Hollywood Studios.  Although we’ve seen clips on the Travel Channel and online, it’s mesmerizing in person. Words cannot describe it, and it was definitely the highlight of the trip.  The “snowfall” was so realistic to our New-Englander eyes.  But, our own photos were terrible so I’m glad we asked Photopass photogs to take some.  Their professional photographers capture the best shots, and this was especially true in this difficult-to-shoot venue.  Check out how cold we look in the picture!  One of the PhotoPass photographers we met was a URI student.  Yep, it’s a Small World.

The parks weren’t as crowded as we anticipated.  An employee at the Wilderness Lodge told us that the attendance was down 22,000 due to the cold.  Busy, yes.  But not super crowded.  And it was pretty cold!  Orlando experienced record-breaking weather during Christmas week—lucky us!  We had to wear hats, gloves, etc.  As New Englanders, we should have been more inured to it, but how often do we spend 12 hours outside in windy, damp 40-degree weather?  Since weather can’t be controlled, we soldiered on and tried to visit attractions that were inside.

The Disney dining plan worked well.  The waiter at our first restaurant accidentally charged our Key to the World instead of the dining plan so we had an extra meal at the end of the trip.  The hotel front desk reversed it for us, no problem.

Flights were smooth and on time.  Check-in, check-out, and airport transportation were all quick and uneventful.  Overall, everyone had a terrific time!  Thanks so much for your help in making this such a wonderful trip.

Best,

Beth

The Most Romantic Resorts in Hawaii

Hawaii has always been a popular honeymoon destination, even from here on the East Coast, but for some reason it is even more “on the radar” with brides and grooms right now. For the past couple of weeks it seems like I have been working on nothing but Hawaii, and that’s great — because the Hawaiian islands are a fantastic honeymoon destination, offering romance, adventure, nightlife, fine dining, culture, history, and more.

Each island offers its own unique flavor, and most couples visit two or three islands during a typical 10- to 14-day honeymoon, with Oahu and Maui being the most popular for first-timers. If you’re thinking about a Hawaiian honeymoon, I’ve got some suggestions for some of the most romantic resorts in the islands. These are not just my picks, but are actually taken from a recent poll (done by Vacation Agent magazine) of destination wedding and honeymoon specialists.

In no particular order, their top ten were:

What do you think? Are there others you would add to the list? Personally, I think I’d add the Royal Hawaiian and the Halekulani on Oahu, but I’d be happy staying at any of these resorts! If you’re hankering for a Hawaiian “escape” of your own (honeymoon or otherwise), give me a call.

An off-season “escape” to Italy

I just received a trip report from some great clients who visited Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast in Nov/Dec. Definitely not the peak time of year to visit Italy, but there are some terrific bargains to be found in the off-season. And as you’ll see in their review, they had a lot of fun despite running into some rainy weather!

Hi Ann,

Sarah and I returned home from our Italian journey this afternoon. It was great, much more than Sarah and I expected. We would rate this experience a 10, the only downside was the weather which was just bad luck.

Our round trip flights were pretty good on Alitalia, the only problem was the food on the airplane, which was awful, but service and comfort were positive.

The Rome transfer was good.

Hotel Borromeo was perfectly located. We got there around 7:30 a.m. and the staff instructed us we would have to wait until 2 p.m. When asked where we could store the bags, he told us there was a room in the hallway. It was actually a closet w/no security feature as anyone could have walked in and taken anything they wanted to. When we came back at 1:35 p.m. the staff guy looked at the clock and told us we would have to wait until 2 p.m. because that was the earliest you are allowed to check in. I guess I just expect the staff to go out of the way a little bit. The room was really, really small which wasn’t a big deal and the safe did not work and we were told it would be to our disadvantage to switch rooms just because of the safe. Of the three hotels we stayed at this was definitely the least impressive.

The two Dark Rome tours (walking tour and Vatican City tour) were amazing. The tour guides were very nice and very knowledgeable and fun. We even booked an additional trip through Dark Rome (Catacomb tour), which turned out to be a real gem. We were able to visit a basilica that they had found to be built on top of another basilica which was built on another church which was built on a house from the 1st century, it was great.

We ate at a restaurant in Rome that overlooked the Coliseum, it was pricy but definitely worth it.

The train rides were great, we had heard a lot of horror stories about gypsies etc, but we actually enjoyed the train rides and the 1st class business atmosphere.

The transfer to and from Sorrento was more than we expected. The driver was knowledgeable and friendly and would answer any question as well as offer up info about history, etc.

Hotel Antiche Mura was a 5-star experience. They upgraded us to a suite that was bigger than our downstairs at home. The inside and outside were beautiful and the staff was bubbly and very, very helpful. I would definitely stay there again.

We traveled to Positano via bus. Because of the twists and turns, the rain, the gas smell of the bus, it is not for the weak of heart. Sarah and I were both very nauseated to and from the town. However, the town itself was perfect. It was beautiful, cute and we actually can’t wait until one day we can visit there again and stay at a hotel on the coast during the summer.

The Florence hotel was very classy. The room and the breakfast were just what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The staff was helpful and overall it was a nice hotel.

The Uffizi gallery wasn’t our favorite but the cooking class was the highlight of our trip. The chef was comical and very knowledgeable and we met some fun Americans and it was just like spending a night with friends from home. We made eggplant parm, gnocchi, a vinaigrette chicken and a strawberry desert. We loved it so much we almost booked it the next night which was his “pizza and desert” class. The Tuscan hill town tour was a downpoint as we were told on Friday night that it was cancelled because we were the only two on the tour. It ended up working out okay because we enjoyed an extra day of eating and shopping and relaxing.

Tips/Advice for other people: we still are not sure whether or not to tip waiters in Europe? We tipped between 15-20% on everything but we were told by a student in Italy that we should not be tipping???? [Annie’s advice: tips are generally included on the bill in Italy, but you can certainly add a little extra for great service] Also we learned that you have to ask for the check — unlike here in America, they don’t rush you out and will let you stay all night at the restaurant which is a nice change. The food was great and the restaurants would give us what we called “presents” which ranged from free appetizers, to free shots, to free chocolate, it was nice

We have a bunch of ideas for our next trip, we just have to narrow them down, we are thinking around May-June, but we will definitely book through you again, you made everything very easy for us, those Rome and Florence books you gave us were AMAZING!! Very, very helpful. Thank you for your time and if you want any pictures for your web site let us know.

Sincerely,
Bryan and Sarah

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
