Seize the opportunity!

I spent the day in Boston yesterday for the “trade day” at the Boston Globe Travel Show. I attended seminars, networked with other travel agents, and talked to representatives from some of the major travel companies and tourism destinations.

Whenever I go to events like this I come back all charged up about the travel industry, and full of ideas for how to make my business even better than it already is. This year, I also came back excited about the opportunities for my clients!

Across the board, the consistent message from every tourism professional there was that 2009 is going to be a banner year for travelers, and we will NEVER see these prices again.

Cruise lines were talking about two-for-one deals and free airfare. Hoteliers were talking about free nights, special amenities, and unique inclusions. And tour operators were touting unprecedented savings on trip-of-a-lifetime destinations like China, Antartica and Greenland.

The take away message is this — if you’ve been holding off on a dream vacation because you think you can’t afford it, this is the year to seize the opportunity and take that trip.

Ann's Italian Adventure Day 4 - Rome's Highlights
To maxize a short stay in Rome you can do a “Rome in a Day” tour.

🇮🇹 Ann's small-group walking tour kicked off at Piazza Navona, where they met their guide, Francesco, who explained the history of the city, and how Rome is like a lasagna, built in layers upon layers.

A tour like this lets you scratch the surface of all the major highlights like the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, The Colosseum, and The Vatican Museums.

🏛Francesco pointed out buildings (like this Roman chamber of commerce) where you can clearly see the layers, from what was the ancient street level up to now!

🏛At the Colosseum, Francesco told stories about the emperors and the gladiators and how the Romans’ love for blood sport caused the extinction of some wild animals they captured for these battles (wiping out lions from Northern Africa, for example).

⛪After the Colosseum, it was a short bus over to the Vatican Museums. They had a quick tour of a few of the galleries and museums.

☔Traveling in April means potentially crazy weather - including this hail storm - but it didn’t put a damper on the day!

Ann's Italian Adventure: Day 3- Rome! The train journey from Lake Como to Rome connects in Milan with just enough time to grab some delicious focaccia at the Milano Centrale station.

Then its on to the lovely Savoy Hotel. Ann's first night in Rome was spent in Trastevere for drinks and dinner. Started out at @machesietevenutiafa for beers and finished at the @jerrythomas.barroom . A tiny little speakeasy with six tables!

The highlight of today was booking a three hour private tour of Lake Como on a classic 1960’s Riva Super Aquarama, which picked us up right at our hotel dock and took us all around the lake in style.

Captain Paolo had all the info about the area, its history, and the inside scoop on who owns all these gorgeous villas, and what it costs to rent them out for weddings!

A boat tour like this is an amazing way to see the Lake and the villas! And Everett even got a chance to drive this classic boat!

For lunch: Il Sereno hotel. Which has a gorgeous lakefront pool, and a fabulous restaurant!

A perfect way to spend the day in Lake Como!
