Is a destination wedding right for me?

The million-dollar question! More and more couples are choosing to get married in a far-flung destination, and it can be an absolutely magical experience….or not. There are some important things to consider before deciding on a destination wedding, and your answers to the questions below may help you figure out if it’s the right option for the two of you:

  • Are you hoping/expecting that all of your friends/family will jump on board with the idea and come along? Will you be okay (or even happier) if they don’t? Even the most supportive and enthusiastic guests can end up changing their minds about attending a destination wedding once they see the actual commitment required from them in terms of time and money.
  • Are you looking forward to planning out all the details of the ceremony and reception? Are you a DIY-fanatic with Pinterest boards galore? Planning a wedding in a foreign country really forces couples to be a little bit more “laissez faire” about the whole thing  – the resort’s wedding coordinator might take 48-72 hours to respond to your emails;  the local, seasonal flowers may not end up being the exact shade of pink that you had envisioned;  and it can be cost-prohibitive to ship all of your hand-made favors through customs in advance.
  • Does your union come with any special circumstances? Even the most basic wedding in a foreign country requires some extra hoops/hurdles in terms of paperwork and logistics (residency requirements, blood tests, documents, etc.)  If yours is a same-sex wedding, or involves a previous divorce or annulment, you’ll need to think about the extra steps involved and decide if it might be easier to get married at home first to make it legal and then do a symbolic destination wedding ceremony with friends and family.

If none of these questions phase you, and you’re excited about sharing some extended time with your closest friends and family in a romantic destination, with – oh yeah –a wedding thrown in, then you are probably the perfect candidate for a destination wedding!

Check out this video from Megan and Derek’s recent wedding in a romantic villa overlooking Puerto Vallarta, and give me a call if I can help you plan something just as magical 🙂

A Pacific Northwest Adventure

A good honeymoon should reflect the bride and groom’s shared passions and interests. A great honeymoon should be so completely tailored to the specific couple that you literally can’t imagine anyone else taking the same trip. That’s definitely the case with Corkie and Kyle’s honeymoon adventures in Canada and the Pacific Northwest!

Hey Ann!

Thank you for reaching out! We are certainly happy to tell you about our trip!

Delta flight out to Calgary — not my favorite airline in terms of snacks they provide and lack of flight entertainment but when it’s the most cost effective, it’s fine.

Rental Car in Canada — good experience!

Fairmont Banff Springs — Beautiful place, wonderful and friendly staff. We used the valet service which was really nice and cost $35 a day. We didn’t get a room upgrade but we did utilize the free breakfast buffet every morning which retails for two at $70 plus tip. The breakfast was nice, with lots to choose from. One downside of our stay was we had construction going on right outside our window which woke us up at 8 am with men out on a loud metal ladder. We talked to the front desk and they discounted us $100 and said it would probably stop in a day or so, but it didn’t and by Thursday I went down and they discounted us a little more and gave us a room change which was nice because we didn’t get woken up again. Their spa is amazing! They have multiple hot tubs and a mineral pool, which we got access to for the day when we had our massages, which were great. We went horseback riding, played tennis, used the fitness facility and pool and hot tub at the Fairmont and they were all great! As a side note they have a Fairmont President’s Club which we registered for for free and it automatically saved us 10% at the spa, access to the tennis courts and free wifi in the rooms! We also ate at their nice restaurant, Castello. It was really nice! They are only open three hours a night so we made a reservation!

Banff sightseeing – we did the gondola, a boat tour of Minnewanka, Johnson Canyon (was our favorite), Lake Louise (the wait to eat lunch at the Fairmont there would have been an hour so we left ) we ate at Saltlick, Bear Street Tavern, The Maple Leaf, & The Bison to name a few of the higher-end restaurants. We agreed that the week in Banff was wonderful and relaxing but that we probably would have been happy to stay there for four days and go to a different part of Canada because a week was a long time.

Flight to Seattle — Nice flight nothing to report.. We did have a moment at the airport of “how should we get to the hotel?” and we were cranky. We opted for a cab.

Olive 8 hotel in Seattle — Really nice, we weren’t able to get an upgrade but our room was nice. The shower has no door and there is a very modern design to the place. You actually need a room key to keep the lights on — very green! They also have a very nice gym. I did get a pedicure at their spa and it was relaxing. We also used their hot tub. We had their included breakfast every day we were there and it was delicious.

Seattle sightseeing — we walked a ton, Pike Place Market was really fun. There were a ton of homeless people, panhandlers and drug addicts near the market and our hotel so we didn’t walk around too much at night. We went to the Experience Music Project and it was fantastic. We actually bought a CityPass and it was a great deal to do the Space Needle, EMP, Aquarium and a ferry ride (we didn’t do that). The Space Needle and the Aquarium were okay. We are glad we did them, and we think they would be fun for kids. We did the Big Ferris Wheel as well — also kind of pricey and touristy. We ate a lot of great food and we went to Capital Hill and saw some great boutiques and local shops, which we loved.

We stopped in Portland on our way to Cannon Beach and we had an awesome time. Great food and great stores to look at. We did have to Google where to go because it’s hard to find the cool spots if you start out where we did (at VooDoo Donuts). VooDoo Donuts was such a disappointment — touristy and not worth waiting on line, as famous as it is. We stayed in Portland until about 8pm and then checked in late at the Stephanie Inn.

Rental Car to Portland — there was an issue: We were unaware that there was a 9am pick up time and we showed up two hours late we almost didn’t get a car — they didn’t contact us or anything so we are glad we got their last car.

Stephanie Inn in Cannon Beach — was our favorite place. Tempurpedic bed and fireplace in the room, with an incredible view. They had fresh baked cookies in the lobby           that Kyle couldn’t stop eating. We preferred that it was smaller than the Fairmont, but just as fancy, which made it more special. We walked on the beach.  We loved going into town — so many cool stores. We took a surf lesson which we booked with Lauren at Seaside Surf Shop and it was amazing!  She took us to “shorties” which is a local surf spot and then we went on our own surfing at Indian Beach. Awesome!

We then stopped back in Portland hours before our flight and ate more food and saw more cool shops and got to the airport a few hours before our flight.

It was a really wonderful trip! If you have any specific questions lets us know!!!

Carpe Diem!

Life happens, and I often have clients who have to cancel, re-arrange, or postpone trips because of unexpected developments in their lives — some happy, like pregnancy or a new job, but some that are more somber, like a broken engagement or an illness or death in the family. Shannon and Phil were dealing with her stepmom’s terminal illness, but decided to “roll the dice” and take the 30th birthday getaway to Las Vegas that they had been looking forward to. Her feedback is below. I absolutely love her “seize the adventure while you can” spirit 🙂

Hi Ann,

I’m so sorry for the huge delay in my response regarding our Vegas trip. My stepmother’s health was a roller coaster for the last two months, starting two days before we left for Vegas and sadly ending two weeks ago with her passing. I let a lot of things slide during that time.

The trip was very successful. Our room was incredible and we took full advantage, including a romantic room service dinner in the room’s “lounge” overlooking the strip (the view was an upgrade courtesy of you tipping the hotel to Phil’s 30th, thank you very much.)

Shannon and Phil 2

The scene was a little quieter than I expected, to be honest (and I’m not that wild) but we had a great time.

Highlights included:

– The luxury race track   where Phil zipped around in his beloved Nissan GTR and I even sat shotgun for 5 laps with a pro drag racer. (Quick tip: It’s cheaper to take the provided limo to the Exotics race track than a cab.)

Stealing the pot against a hardened poker player’s full house with a straight flush at 3am. You should have seen his face!

Winning $100 on a single penny bet (not just a penny machine but literally a 1 cent bet)

– And an unbelievable, 2 Michelin star dinner in front of the Bellagio fountains at Picasso right before we headed off to see my college roommate perform as a Bally’s showgirl. Picasso is an absolute must for anyone who loves fine dining, and even though we sat outside we were encouraged to explore all the Picasso artwork gracing the restaurant’s walls.

My stepmom’s illness and passing has served as a stark reminder that life is short and it’s worth it to seize adventure while you can.

I will send you a separate email about these, but my father wants to take a family trip this fall to a Caribbean island with me, Phil, my brother and stepbrothers, and I still want to do Paris for my 30th this Spring. Of course we want to work with you as you have done such a wonderful job with Vegas and Palm Island.

Once you go “butler”, you’ll never go back!

Clients often question whether they would want or need the butler service that comes with the higher-level suites at Sandals resorts, and I explain that it’s not something you “need”….but that once you experience it you will want to bring your butler home with you!  Honeymooners Dana and Kevin just returned from a romantic honeymoon at the Sandals Grande Riviera Beach and Villa Golf Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and they did a fantastic job of describing exactly what their butlers did to make their trip so memorable:

Hi Ann

So sorry I’m just now getting back to you! We bought a house right before we left for Jamaica so we’v  e been caught up in moving madness. But we had the BEST time! The resort was amazing and so beautiful. And our room [Butler Village Honeymoon Romeo & Juliet Sanctuary One Bedroom Villa With Private Pool] was beyond incredible.

When we got to the resort on the first day, they brought us into the Butler’s Lounge and set us up with some rum punch while our butler took care of checking us in, getting our room key and setting up a charge-to-the-room account. When that was all set, our butler drove us up the hill on her golf cart to our room and gave us the grand tour. It was amazing! When we walked in the door, we were in an open-air courtyard with a private jacuzzi, pool (complete with a waterfall and floats), lounge chairs and an outdoor shower. To the right  was our living area with a couch, tv, table and a fully stocked bar with everything we could imagine. The resort also had a bottle of champagne on ice, ready for us to toast. To the left of the courtyard was our room, which had two sets of doors. We could literally open one of the sets and step straight into the jacuzzi if we wanted. The bedroom was so comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful. Our butler gave us all the information we would need to know what was going on, and gave us a cell phone so we could call her at any time. And best of all, when we went out to get some dinner, our butler had our luggage brought up and unpacked everything SO nicely!

We had two butlers, Josie and Christa, and they were both wonderful. We are pretty independent people, which I think they picked up on, so they did their best to get us to ask for things. They would call each morning to check in and see what we wanted for breakfast. When we were done lounging (we liked to start the day by having breakfast in the room and floating around our pool with a mimosa) they would drive up and pick us up to take us to whichever part of the resort we wanted. During the day, they would find us and surprise us with specialty cocktails, snacks, coconut shrimp platters – basically everything we wanted without knowing we wanted it. They would also set up surprises for us in our room while we were out and about. Anything from flower petals on the bed and towel animals to special baths, romantic set-ups in the courtyard, and surprise cakes made to celebrate our honeymoon. They also took care of making reservations at any restaurant we wanted for dinner, and always managed to get us set up with whatever table had the best view. They would even take care of errands for us, and always found a way to go above and beyond. One night I bought a watch in the jewelry store for my husband’s birthday and asked our butler if she could pick it up for me while we went to dinner. When we got back to our room, she had it gift-wrapped and presented nicely on the bureau, with receipts tucked away in an envelope next to my purse in the closet.

The resort itself had so much to do. It had two sides – the garden/hill side (which our room was on) and the beach side. The hillside had a GIANT pool with swim-up bar and a couple of restaurants and bars. It also had a basketball court, shuffle board, life-size chess, and ping pong to play whenever we felt like it. There was also a gift shop next to the hotel lobby that had a lot of great stuff (we bought a lot of souvenirs :)) When we wanted to go to the beach side (which is where we spent most of our time during the day), there was a shuttle that ran every few minutes from the lobby on our side. It was only a couple of minutes at most for the shuttle ride – it just took us down the hill and across the street. There was everything you could imagine on the beach side. Two pools with swim-up bars, tons of other smaller pools and jacuzzis, a dozen restaurants and bars, several beach spots and tons of activities. We were able to go snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and aqua triking.

The restaurants had some of the best food I have ever had! We always ordered room service breakfast (I’m still craving those omelets), tried out a casual place for lunch and then dressed up for dinner. The buffet-style lunches were delicious, but my favorite was Bella Napoli pizza next to the Amphitheater swim-up bar. By far the greatest pizza I have ever had. We got the seafood pizza, and the guy who made it made it in the shape of a heart after asking if we were on our honeymoon. And, we were able to enjoy it in the pool at the bar. Awesome! Every dinner we had (aside from the sushi, which put all other sushi I’ve had to shame) was either four or five courses of amazing. No description I could use would do it justice, but I’ve never had fresher seafood or more perfectly cooked steaks.

The bars were a lot of fun and there was always something different to try at night. During the day, we loved soaking up the sun and enjoying the pool bars. The bartenders were all really personable and fun, and everyone had a signature drink. We’d order what we wanted from time to time, but more often than not, we’d end up getting an amazing drink just by telling the bartender to surprise us.

We went on two excursions: the Dunn’s River Falls Catamaran/Party Boat Ride and the Mystic Mountain Ziplining and Bobsledding. Both AMAZING, but the river falls was definitely our favorite. We took a catamaran out and they anchored so we could snorkel. WAY cooler fish than the free trip we took from the resort (even though we still enjoyed that one). Then, they took us to the falls. Climbing it was so much fun and the guides did a great job! Then, on the way back, they cranked the music on the boat and opened up the bar for a full-on party on the hour back to the resort. Such a blast!

Overall, it was amazing and we wish we didn’t have to leave! Everyone we encountered was amazing at their job, wicked friendly and beyond willing to do anything you might need. We couldn’t have had a better time. It was the perfect combination of fun, romantic and relaxing. The only recommendation I would have is for the resort to have a checklist on the website for scuba diving requirements. We knew we would have to get certified, but I am asthmatic and didn’t know I’d need a note from my doctor clearing me to sign up. Completely understandable, but I wish we would have known before we left so we could have (hopefully) gone. They did have a system in place where you could fill out a form to fax to your doctor to get approval, but I don’t have a general practitioner here yet that would be familiar enough with my condition to approve anything without seeing me first. Otherwise, there wasn’t a hiccup!

Sorry for writing a book, but I figured too much detail was better than not enough :). We are thinking of doing a cruise for our anniversary next year, so we will definitely be contacting you for help with that. Thanks so much for making our trip easy on us!

Best,

Dana

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
