Building Your Bucket List

Where have you always wanted to go, and what have you always wanted to experience? As we gaze wistfully out our windows during quarantine, dreaming of the day we can travel again, it seems that “someday” is always in the future. Well now is the perfect time to start planning!

Maybe you have a rough bucket list- you want to visit Machu Picchu or Hawaii; perhaps you’d like to go wine tasting in Argentina or on a safari in South Africa. But how do you actually make that happen? We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to building a list that takes you from vague dreams to concrete plans.

Part 1 – Dreaming

Get inspired

If you don’t have a travel bucket list yet, or if you haven’t thought about it in a while, the first step is to start dreaming.

Go onto Pinterest and Instagram, look up articles with bucket list travel destinations. Check out the UNESCO World Heritage site and read travel blogs. Be inspired!

Then take thirty minutes and write down every idea you can think of. Write without limitations, without worry about finances, time, or feasibility.

Pare it down

Look at what you’ve madly scribbled down in the past half hour and begin to really consider each place. Why is it on your list? What excites you about going there?

Do you dream of interacting with wildlife?

Is relaxing in an over-water bungalow in French Polynesia your idea of paradise?

Pare your list down to only the most exciting places. Try to keep it to a manageable size (five to ten?) You can always add on as you make your way through this exercise.

Prioritize

Now that you have a list, it’s time to put it in order. For each place on your list identify three things:

1) Physicality: Are there any physical challenges presented by this destination or experience? Consider if it will require strenuous exercise or activity, or if it’s a place you can kick back and relax. Place more physically demanding trips higher up on the list (if you’re dreaming of hiking the Inca Trail in Peru, for example, you might want to do that while you’re younger), while other more relaxing destinations might be perfect for when you’re retired (winetasting in Tuscany can be done at any age!)

2) Cost: You don’t have to get into specifics at this stage but briefly consider the overall cost. Maybe rate the places on your list with dollar signs from least expensive ($) to most expensive ($$$$). Is this a place you’d want to splurge on the finest luxury resort or invest in pricey private experiences? Or, is it someplace that can be done on a more moderate budget?

3) Travel Partner: Some trips are perfect solo adventures, and others are the romantic getaway every couple needs. There are places you want to experience with your best buds and places you’d love to take your grandkids to see someday. Write down your ideal travel partners for each place.

Now, make a fresh bucket list in order of physicality (from most to least physical), cost (from least to most expensive), and travel partner (from single to grandkids). This should help you determine which life stage is best for which destination/experience.

Research

Next, we move into preliminary research and this current pandemic is the perfect time for it! Since the pandemic, many places and natural wonders now have virtual tours! You can utilize these to decide if you want to go see that museum in person, or if the botanical garden is worth the hype. There’s no need to pin down everything exactly– just use this time to form more detailed dreams.

Once you have a few more specifics you can write down an estimated length for each trip. For example: if you’re researching Iceland and you find you want to do The Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle, and Hike a Glacier and see Icelandic Ponies then you know your Iceland trip will need to be more than a weekend.

While you’re researching, pay careful attention to climate and seasonality.

Some places are beautiful pretty much all year round, while others have severe rainy or cold seasons. Other bucket list experiences only occur at certain times of year (like the cherry blossom festival in Japan, or whale watching in Alaska). Find out if your activity has a certain months or get an idea of which months to avoid.

Part 2: Planning

You have your list of places, you have some basic parameters for each one and now it’s time to start making a 5-10-15 year plan!

Milestones

The first step in planning is to look at your life. Do you have any big milestones coming up in the next five or ten years? A big birthday? A big anniversary? Any special occasions that might be perfect to pair with a bucket list trip?

You could celebrate your 50th with a river cruise down the Danube!

Start plotting your travel timeline with these big events in mind. Using these mile-markers will help you visualize a more concrete timeframe to put your trips into motion.

Solidify Your Plans

You did it! You made a bucket list, prioritized it, and gave some thought to timing. Now you just need to take the final step: start penciling it in!

The shoulder months are always a great time to travel. The weather isn’t as extreme as summer, the prices are generally lower, and the attractions are often less crowded. With travel plans for the spring shoulder months now dashed by travel restrictions, we turn our attention to the enticing Fall weather. Here are our recommendations for the 5 Best Places to dream about visiting this Fall:

#1 France

The romance of this already enchanting country reaches it’s height as the weather cools and the leaves begin to change.  Walk through one of Paris’ legendary parks (like the Jardin du Luxemburg) under a canopy of brilliant Fall foliage. Then move to a cozy café and enjoy a delectable chocolat chaud as you watch the leaves cascade down onto tree-lined boulevards. The cool weather outside means it’s the perfect time to enjoy Paris and its many museums and art galleries.

If you’re looking to leave the city behind, France offers the beachy Riviera or the mountainous Pyrenees. You’ll discover wineries in harvest, amazing gastronomy, history and tradition. Vineyards and forests display the full spectrum of Fall colors in the countryside. Enjoy these idyllic spots while sipping a glass of local wine.

Germany offers a huge variety of parks and public gardens in which to view the Fall foliage. Add to that impressive castles ( Neuschwanstein & Burg-Eltz) and medieval bridges around every corner and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Any city you choose is perfect in the Fall. October brings the Festival of Lights in Berlin. Dresden is great to explore on foot without the exhausting heat of summer. Hannover offers world-class shopping next to its picturesque parks. Or you can take a River Cruise on the Danube to see even more!

Germany is for those who want to mix history with fairytales and still see amazing Fall colors. What’s more, typical German food such as sausage, stews, soups, and beers are ideal for warming up on crisp Autumn day.

If you want to stay closer to home, still see brilliant Fall colors but avoid the New England leaf-peeper crowds, then head to Oregon. It’s the perfect place to explore the great outdoors and fill your lungs with fresh crisp air. Oregon offers hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, horseback riding and all kinds of other outdoor activities. Warm up after your days outside at any of the award-winning local craft breweries.

A huge variety of scenery will enliven your trip to the Pacific Northwest. Volcanoes, cinder cones, and lava-flows leap out against the brightly colored leaves along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. Cascading waters lead you along leaf-strewn paths in the Columbia River Gorge. Or enjoy the vineyards, orchards and vegetable patches along the Hood River County Fruit Loop.

Looking to hang onto the tendrils of summer while still getting a taste of Fall colors? Look no further than Croatia. Croatia offers up great history and culture at a relaxing pace. Walk the medieval city walls and Old Town of Dubrovnik without the crowds and the heat. Or enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the Dalmatian Islands while indulging in great seafood and local wines.

The temperatures stay mild through October and the sun-soaked sea is usually still warm enough to swim. But you can also find a decent display of Fall colors at the Plitvice Lakes National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park features 16 lakes connected by waterfalls and surrounded by colorful foliage. The weather is optimal for hiking along the easy paths and you can even take a ride around the larger lakes when you tire of walking. Croatia has a little bit of everything for everyone. History, culture, Fall foliage, nightlife, and beaches.

Escape the cool Fall weather entirely with a trip to Greece. Here you won’t find many Autumn colors, but you can enjoy the warm sunshine and water temperature in the mid-70s! Greece is a great place to extend your summer vacation into September when the crowds disappear. Enjoy the white-washed, blue-roofed buildings, labyrinthine streets and picturesque alleys of rugged Greek Islands like Santorini or Paros. Relax at water-front spas, enjoy incredible seafood and soak up the local history and culture.

The water temperature is still warm and the seas are clear making Fall a great time to go diving or snorkeling. The days are not too hot making archeological ruins more comfortable to explore. Enjoy a less crowded, more temperate Greece without losing out on any of the summer fun.

Adventure & Romance in Thailand

Marissa and Derek wanted something exotic and unforgettable for their honeymoon. They were looking for unique cultural experiences, adventures that would push them a little bit beyond their comfort zone, and scenery that would be different than anything they had already seen on trips to the Caribbean and Europe. The perfect place, of course, was a week in Thailand.
The first four days were packed full of fantastic adventures: jungle trekking in Doi Inthanon National Park, a Khantoke Dinner with traditional food and dances, playing with fire while learning to cook traditional Thai food and visiting elephants!
To keep that classic honeymoon feel, they spent the last four days relaxing on the beach at the stunning Vijitt Resort. I was so happy to find the perfect balance of adventure and romance for this bucket-list honeymoon!

Here’s their feedback:

The people in Thailand are so friendly. Everyone was so warm and welcoming.

The massages outside of the resorts were phenomenal and cheap! I recommend getting a Thai massage at least once.

Chiang Mai

Doing the excursions at the beginning of the week was a great idea. We had a jam-packed three days in Chiang Mai and then got to relax on our next destination in Phuket.

[At Patara Elephant Farm] We loved the elephants. They seemed happy, healthy and very excited to see us as much as we were excited to see them. Some highlights were getting to feed and bathe them.

The lunch they provided for us on the excursion was delicious and the trainers used our camera to get a ton of great photos! They also took photos themselves and sent us a link two days later with all the photos at no additional cost.

Our chef was very personable and we learned to cook some great food. A perfect bonding experience for honeymooners

Phuket

Phuket was so romantic and gave us that perfect honeymooner feel after exploring the jungle for 4 days in Chiang Mai. We got to kick back and relax.

The beach is incredible and no one is bothering you to buy things like you sometimes find in places like Bermuda and the Bahamas.

Our room was literally facing the water. The walls were made of glass and we woke up to the ocean every morning. We could even take a shower or sit in the bath while directly looking at the ocean.

4 Ways to Skip Security Lines at the Airport

There’s nothing worse than the stress of running late to catch a flight. These days you need to factor in an extra three hours to get to the airport, check in, and get through security. When you land back home, you stumble off an international flight and straight into an insufferably long customs line.

If only you could skip those lines….

Fortunately, you can! There are several programs that address these airport inconveniences. But which should you choose? TSA-precheck, Global Entry, CLEAR, Mobile Passport? It’s difficult to know where to start.

We’ve put together the pros and cons of each service to help you decide:

a busy airport terminal

TSA Pre-Check

What is it?
TSA pre-check is a government-run skip-the-line option. When you arrive at the airport enter a special security line for both identity checks and scanning. It’s often significantly shorter than the regular line and will help you arrive at your gate stress-free!

Pros

  • Skip the long lines and fast-pass your way through security!
  • In over 200 U.S. airports and with 73 airlines
  • No need to unpack and de-shoe as you go through a separate scanning line
  • Children under 12 don’t need their own membership and can sail through with you

Cons

  • You need to make sure you have a pre-check logo on your boarding pass. Sometimes during the booking process, it will disappear, so it’s important to double-check that.
  • No guarantee. As more people sign up there is a risk the line will be as long or longer than the regular line.

How to get it: After applying online go for a 15min in-person interview, background check, and fingerprinting.
It’s a straight-forward process but needs to be completed before you book your flight.

Cost: The initial application fee is 85$ for 5 years. (17$ per year)
The application fee is non-refundable.
Some credit cards will pay this fee for you. Be sure to see if you qualify.

Verdict: TSA pre-check is perfect if you’re a frequent flier. While there’s no guarantee of a shorter line, the odds are in your favor and it will cut down on the hassle of going through security.

CLEAR

What is it?
CLEAR is a privately owned company that uses your biometrics as identification instead of your driver’s license or passport. Simply go to the CLEAR kiosk, scan your boarding pass, and tap a finger or blink into an eye identifier. Then a CLEAR representative escorts you to the front of security where you’ll join the regular scanning line.

Pros

  • Skip the long security line where a TSA agent is checking boarding passes
  • You can sign up at a CLEAR kiosk in less than 10 minutes
  • Easy to combine with TSA pre-check or Global Entry
  • Children under 18 can jump the line with you
  • You can add family members (over 18) for an additional $50

Cons

  • You still have to go through the normal scanning line. This means taking off shoes, unpacking liquids etc.
  • Only in 34 airports
  • By far the most expensive option

How to get it: Go up to a CLEAR kiosk at the airport, sign-up, pay, and enter some basic biometric data.
Easy- peasy and no need to do it before booking your flight.

Cost: The most expensive option at $179 per year.

Verdict: CLEAR is good if you’re a frequent flier out of one of the airports they’re currently in. It lets you feel like a VIP being escorted to the front of the line. But if you don’t often fly out of one of their airports it’s not worth the cost.

honeymooners on a boat in italy
TSA pre-check or Clear will fast-track you to the relaxing part of your vacation

Global Entry

What is it?
Global Entry is run by U.S. Customs & Border Protection. It’s perfect for international travelers because its main function is to expedite the return process. Instead of waiting in the customs line after your long flight home, you head to a Global Entry kiosk. Scan your passport or green card then scan your fingerprint and fill out the customs questions. The kiosk will give you a receipt and direct you towards your baggage claim.

Pros

  • Skip the long customs line when you’ve emerged bleary-eyed from a long flight home
  • Includes TSA pre-check to make your departure as smooth as your return
  • Applicable for valid passport holders or green-card holders

Cons

  • Children require their own membership
  • Currently only in 75 airports

How to get it: Fill out the online application. Then schedule an appointment at one of their locations for an in-person interview, background check, and fingerprints.
It’s a straight forward process but must be completed before you book.

Cost: Application fee of $100 valid for 5 years ($20 per year).
Because it includes TSA-precheck, think of it as an extra $15 to make your return as smooth as your departure.
Some credit cards will pay this fee for you.

Verdict: If you travel internationally this is a great option. You get all the benefits of TSA pre-check plus the benefit of sailing through customs. Because all children need their own membership this is not ideal for families.

Mobile Passport

What is it?
Mobile Passport is a free app designed to speed up your customs process. You simply save some basic passport info to the app. When you land back in the U.S., answer the usual customs questions. Mobile Passport will give you a QR code. Look for the much shorter Mobile Passport line in the arrivals hall, show the CBP officer your QR code and you’re on your way!

Pros

  • Skip the long customs line
  • Often just as fast as Global Entry
  • Great for families: it allows you to include everyone’s profile in a single transaction.
  • It’s free!

Cons

  • Only available in 27 airports
  • You must still be manually processed by a CBP officer (unlike Global Entry)
  • Only available to U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors

How to get it: Download the app on Google Play or the Apple Store, enter your basic information, and you’re good to go! It’s simple, fast, and incredibly easy.

Cost: Free!

Verdict: Although it’s only available in a small number of airports, it’s worth the download if you’re an international traveler.
Because you can add the whole family to one transaction it’s perfect for families with tired children.

air tahiti plane

So which is best? What should you choose to fast-pass your way through airline security? It truly depends on what type of traveler you are and where you’re traveling from to find the right fit.

With any of these services, your next experience at the airport will be much faster and less stressful. Combine that with a customized vacation designed by Annie’s Escapes, and your travel worries are over!

You provided excellent guidance for us. I appreciated that you really had us think about what was most important to us when we were selecting the right cruise – and not to totally focus on what other people had to say. THANK YOU for helping to make this a memorable trip for our family! It really was a trip of a lifetime!

Clare and Mark (family cruise to Alaska)

The level of service we experienced was out of this world (and we did NOT make it easy on Ann). We weren’t quite sure where we wanted to go, when we would be able to go, or what “vibe” we were going for. After asking us some key questions (what we liked, didn’t like, why, etc.) Ann helped us narrow down our trip details and planned the honeymoon of our dreams. She helped book some of our excursions, answered some emergency questions while abroad and was always available/willing to help. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be using anyone else for future travel planning – Ann is a rockstar!
